Oscar-winning actor Brie Larson will make her West End debut with a revival of Sophocles‘ play “Elektra.”
In the play, written by the ancient Greek tragedian circa 420 BC, Elektra, haunted by her father’s assassination, is consumed by grief; a need for survival; and a thirst for vengeance. When her long lost brother Orestes at last returns, she urges him to a savage and terrifying conclusion.
The adaptation is by poet Anne Carson. The production will be directed by Daniel Fish, whose Broadway and West End productions of “Oklahoma!” won best musical revival at the Tony and Olivier awards respectively.
Empire Street Productions, the outfit behind “Slave Play” at London’s Noël Coward Theatre headlined by Kit Harrington and Olivia Washington, is producing. The creative team features choreography by Annie-B Parson, set design by Jeremy Herbert, costume design by Doey Lüthi, lighting design by Adam Silverman, sound design by Max and Ben Ringham, composer Ted Hearne, casting by Heather Basten CDG, voice and dialect by Kate Godfrey and costume supervisor Deborah Andrews.
The play will open at the Theatre Royal Brighton Jan. 13-18, 2025 and will then transfer to London’s Duke of York’s Theatre Jan. 24- April 12.
Larson, Oscar winner for “Room,” said: “I couldn’t be more excited to perform in this Greek drama, or in better company collaborating with Daniel Fish and Anne Carson. Fish added: “What is ancient and what is contemporary? Carson’s translation explodes this question. It is a thrilling challenge to work on Sophocles’s tragedy, by way of Carson’s words, and on the beautiful stage of The Duke of York’s with Brie Larson”.
