Jon M. Chu is shutting down the rumors.
Following reports that the Wicked director will be helming the film adaptation of Britney Spears‘ memoir The Woman in Me, Jon spoke out on social media regarding rampant rumors surrounding casting.
Last summer, Universal Pictures reportedly acquired the rights to the book, and the Wicked director, along with producer Marc Platt, will be developing the book into a film.
Over the weekend, a tweet went viral based on a Life & Style article, which suggested Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Millie Bobby Brown are battling for the role of the “Hold It Against Me” superstar.

“None of this is true,” Jon responded.
“Sounds exciting but have not had one conversation about casting this movie yet. We are way too early in development. Sorry 🤷🏻.”
That being said, one of the aforementioned stars did say she would “love” to play the role.
Another actress responded to fans casting her in the role.
Earlier in 2025, the director provided an update about where things currently stand with the movie.
