The face of boxing for the last five years or so has been Canelo Alvarez. The Mexican superstar has gone after history after becoming arguably the biggest PPV draw in the post-Floyd Mayweather era. He earned undisputed status at 168 pounds while many believed he was fighting above his best weight. Now, he looks to continue his incredible run on Saturday night in Las Vegas as a part of Mexican Independence Day weekend.

Alvarez will put his trio of titles on the line in the super middleweight clash when he welcomes unbeaten Edgar Berlanga to the ring inside T-Mobile Arena.

While many hoped to see Alvarez take on someone like David Benavidez or David Morrell — two of the best fighters at 168 pounds in the last few years who did not get the chance to face him — the champion opted instead of a matchup that could draw more eyes as it pairs the long boxing rivals of Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Alvarez is coming off a thrashing of his fellow countryman in May when he took out Jaime Munguia. Berlanga, meanwhile, started his career with a record-setting knockout streak in the first round of fights at 16. He has looked more human since then, but he did pick up a TKO in his last outing against Padraig McCory.

“It’s easy to say you’ll knock me out, but it’s much more difficult to do it. Saturday night is gonna be very difficult for him, for sure. I’ve prepared for the knockout. I love the feeling of a knockout and I’m gonna do my best to get it done,” Alvarez said this week. “I just can’t wait for Saturday night. This is going to be a great matchup for the people. Mexico vs. Puerto Rico is always exciting.”
