‘Close’ to Being Done Filming, James Gunn Says

James Gunn provided yet another update on Superman — previously known as Superman: Legacy.

The film, which stars David Corenswet in the title role and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, is “getting close” to being done with filming after wrapping its six-week Cleveland shoot this week.

The director and co-head of DC Studios has been sharing updates with his fans on Threads, where he posted a lengthy, er, thread on the social media platform, praising the city of Cleveland for its hospitality while they were in production.

“#Cleveland – today we are leaving you after six amazing weeks of shooting,” he wrote. “From the moment we first came here on a scout a tad less than a year ago and Terminal Tower was lit up with the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place. I would walk down your streets and someone would stop me and tell me how grateful they were we were shooting in their city — not once, not twice but dozens of times.”

He continued, “The wonderful background actors on the film were always so fun and funny and they clapped after takes, something that reminded us Hollywood cynics why we make movies in the first place. The pride you feel in being where Jerry [Siegel] and Joe [Shuster] first created Superman was invigorating. You exemplify his spirit. But just as much it’s the pride you have in your community, your hometown, your radio stations and restaurants and gathering places that touched me.”

When asked by a fan if they had finished shooting the film entirely, Gunn shared that they still had “a couple weeks left,” adding, “It’s a long shoot… but we’re getting close!!”

Superman began production in February and marks the first feature under Gunn and Peter Safran’s reign over DC Studios.

The film, which will be the first project solely focused on the Man of Steel to hit the big screen in over a decade, follows the iconic superhero as he reconciles his alien heritage with his human upbringing, according to the description.

Nicholas Hoult will portray Lex Luthor, while House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock takes on the role of Supergirl.

Wendell Pierce (Perry White), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Terence Rosemore (Otis), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner) and María Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer) round out the cast.

Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
