Could Hemp Seed Oil Help Heal Wounds?

A small study out of Indonesia indicates hemp seed oil could have the potential to accelerate the wound healing process in humans.
As well as its food, cosmetic and other uses, hemp seed oil’s potential anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and skin-regenerative potential has been gaining interest in terms of wound management.
Researchers from Universitas Syiah Kuala in Banda Aceh investigated the efficacy of hemp seed oil on wounds on mice over several weeks, comparing it to chloramphenicol ointment (an antibiotic) and a placebo.
While in the early stages of wound healing (days 1, 3, and 7), hemp seed oil treatment did not significantly differ from chloramphenicol ointment in reducing wound size, it demonstrated superior effectiveness in accelerating wound size reduction compared to the ointment during days 14 and 21.
“While both treatments improved epithelialization, the significant effect observed on day 14 in the present study suggested that hemp seed oil may provide particular benefits during this critical stage of wound healing, potentially accelerating the transition to tissue remodeling.”
The researchers concluded:
“Hemp seed oil demonstrated significant potential in accelerating wound healing processes, particularly in promoting wound size reduction, epithelialization, granulation tissue formation, and vascularization, indicating a superior effect compared to chloramphenicol ointment,” the study’s authors said. “Hemp seed oil may be considered a promising adjunct or alternative treatment for wound management, particularly for patients seeking natural and cost-effective options.”
However, the researchers said despite the encouraging outcomes, further study is required to establish the efficacy and safety of hemp oil in human wound management;
The study, released in January this year, was published in the journal Narra J and can be found here.
Another potential human health related application for hemp seed oil we recently reported on involves malaria. Research suggests Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids can kill off malaria parasites – and hemp seed oil is rich in Omega-3. A US company says hemp seed oil could also help regulate the immune system, avoiding a “dangerous inflammatory cascade” related to malaria.
The firm has been discussing the use of hemp seed oil with leaders in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ghana, countries where malaria is rife.
