AEW Dynamite Results, Winners And Grades As CM Punk Destroys Jack Perry

AEW Dynamite advertised The Young Bucks airing the real-life footage of CM Punk vs. Jack Perry’s infamous Brawl from last year’s AEW All In pay-per-view. After much speculation that this would be a bait-and-switch, with The Young Bucks possibly trolling the AEW audience, the legendary tag team only ended up trolling themselves. AEW aired the actual backstage footage of WWE-contracted wrestler CM Punk beating the hell out of one of its Four Pillars.

The Young Bucks’ segment was in direct response to CM Punk telling his side of the story to Ariel Helwani in regards to the Brawl In. Though the actual footage contradicts Punk’s claim that he didn’t punch anybody, the footage was pretty much in line with CM Punk’s story. If anything, it made CM Punk look even tougher than he let on in a one-sided fight that didn’t last more than 30 seconds.

On a show that drew less than 3,000 fans, AEW continues to book storylines to pop online dirtsheets. If AEW doesn’t smarten up quickly, AEW’s insistence on leaning into internet wrestling storylines will be the death of it.

Swerve Strickland Brawls with Samoa Joe

Wisely, AEW did not start its show with the exclusive footage from AEW All In. This will very likely be saved for the main event, therefore the small niche internet audience that is interested in this will have to wait.

Samoa Joe’s match against Dustin Rhodes was set to kick off Dynamite, but Joe was jumped by Swerve Strickland who did a number on the AEW world champion. The AEW announce team had to work it like they were caught off guard and the show’s program was thrown off schedule.

Swerve vs. Joe Brawl Grade: B

Adam Copeland Def. Penta El Zero Miedo

Penta El Zero Miedo walked out, (kayfabe) unprepared to compete against Adam Copeland this early into the show.

Coming out of the break, there was an overlay of a map on the screen. I don’t think this was as situation like WWE’s cryptic vignette from Raw After Mania. This seemed like a legit mistake from AEW production. Time will tell.

Fans chanted “let’s go Adam” as Penta El Zero Miedo remained in control.

There was a 20-minute countdown to The Young Bucks’ much-talked about segment around 5:18 pm PST. Excalibur said the countdown could change given the 30-minute time limit of this match.

Penta El Zero Miedo took most of this match—at one point Excalibur referred to it as a “commanding lead”—which made it all the less surprising when he lost.

Following Copeland’s win, Brody King crashed the match to attack Copeland. This built up The House of Black’s showdown with Copeland, Eddie Kingston and Jay Briscoe at AEW Dynasty.

In whaat is quickly becoming the funniest gimmick in AEW, Katsuyori Shibata used a translator to ask Renee Paquette “what is his deal?” following a promo from Chris Jericho. Shibata then used that same translator to compliment Paquette’s necklace.

The Young Bucks addressed the infamous Brawl In with footage as real as the glass that caused that fight. Nick Jackson said The Young Bucks were distracted by what happened backstage, which was why they said they lost to FTR at All In. They made reference to Jack Perry being a scapegoat. Matt Jackson said if you don’t like Jack Perry, that’s a problem with you. Without mentioning CM Punk’s name, they said the individual who fought with Perry was friends with FTR.

The Young Bucks aired the footage, and as many expected, it was slightly more of a fight than CM Punk let on, but not enough that Tony Khan should have feared for his life. Punk told Ariel Helwani “I didn’t punch anybody, I just choked somebody a little bit.” This was essentially what happened, though Punk did throw a punch or two.

Following the footage, FTR cut a cringe-adjacent, pro-AEW promo similar to Edge last week. To their credit, the group was eventually able to get the fans on their side despite the awkward energy in the arena. If there’s one nice thing I can say about this inside-baseball angle, it’s that AEW tried its best to make it part of a current storyline between The Young Bucks and FTR.

Shane Taylor Promotions Def. LionHOOK And Katsuyori Shibata

Will Ospreay cut a solid promo where he continued to talk about the amount of wrestling we’re going to see between himself and Bryan Danielson at Dynasty. He once again called AEW “where the best wrestle.” If only this match had an actual human story beyond two men rolling around a mat.

Katsuyori Shibata had this match under control as he trapped Lee Moriarty in a Sleeper Hold. But due to an argument between Chris Jericho and HOOK, Shane Taylor broke the hold and Moriarty was able to find an opening and win the match.

STP vs. LionHOOK and Shibata Grade: B-

Kazuchika Okada Def. Cristiano Argento

This was a squash match where Kazuchika Okada won with ease. After the match, Okada accepted PAC’s challenge. PAC confronted Okada, but The Young Bucks hit the ring to the tune of “CM Punk” chants. That’s right, these heels have messed around and booked CM Punk into the top babyface in the company.

The Young Bucks hit the EVP Trigger on PAC. Nobody really cared as much of the heat was for CM Punk. It didn’t help that the crowd was small.

I wonder how many casual fans actually think this is setting up for Punk to return, because believe me when I say he’s not coming back to AEW anytime soon. Punk will return to WWE in-ring action before he goes back to AEW and the man is currently out with a serious triceps injury. What a mess.

Kazuchika Okada vs. Cristiano Argento Grade: C

Mariah May Def. Anna Jay

Toni Storm and Thunder Rosa engaged in a champagne toast that ended with Storm throwing champagne in Rosa’s face and beating her up.

Mariah May and Anna Jay went back-and-forth and in the end May defeated Jay with a rollup. After the match Mina Shirakawa poured champagne in Mariah May’s mouth and kissed her yet again.

Backstage, following a sit-down interview with Mercedes Mone, the lights went out and Mone was attacked. I have a strong feeling this was done by Kris Statlander.

Mariah May vs. Anna Jay Grade: B

Samoa Joe Def. Dustin Rhodes

AEW went to picture-in-picture, and by the time they came out of it, Rhodes was a bloody mess.

Toward the end of the match, Rhodes brought out the AEW Championship, teasing a disqualification. Rhodes came to his senses and tossed the belt aside, leading to a Cross Rhodes. Surprisingly, this did not lead to chants for “Cody.” They just continued to rally behind Dustin.

Whether or not this was AEW trying to capitalize on Cody Rhodes’ story, Dustin worked his ass off in a violent match against Samoa Joe.

Samoa Joe won by blasting Dustin Rhodes with the championship belt behind the referee’s back. After the match, an incensed Swerve Strickland attacked Joe once again as Samoa Joe fled like Jack Perry after his backstage fight with Punk.
