Whether you’re searching for a cozy sweater or a cute summer dress, TJ Maxx is a great place to shop, but if you’re skipping the home goods section, you’re seriously missing out on some of the best finds the off-price retailer has to offer. And while it might seem like a destination for bargain hunters only, you’d be surprised to learn that even high-end interior designers moonlight as Maxxinistas.
Designer Melanie Bryant of Melanie Bryant Interiors shares that TJ Maxx is her go-to for last-minute styling needs. “We can get those final layers we didn’t order ahead but still need to pull a space together,” she says.
Interior designer Kate Dawson is another proud Maxxinista. “People forget TJ Maxx has a home section—which is exactly why I love it,” she says. “It’s like HomeGoods’ quieter, cooler cousin, but way less picked over.”
Here are ten home items interior designers always buy from TJ Maxx.
Side Tables
Dawson’s go-to items to shop for at TJ Maxx are “chic little side tables.” “There are so many choices,” she says.
Side tables don’t get a lot of wear and tear, so quality isn’t as important as style here. You’ll end up with a fantastic price on fun pieces that instantly upgrade your living room.
Art
Dawson tells me TJ Maxx is also great source for stylish artwork. The store has a variety of sizes, making it an ideal place to find that oversized piece you’d probably pay hundreds of dollars for elsewhere. So, whether you’re looking for a modern canvas to put over your sofa or a chic framed print for a gallery wall in your home office, don’t skip the art section.
Throw Pillows
Pillows are an easy way to refresh a living room or bedroom, but they can be pricy. Fortunately, TJ Maxx has great deals. “Give me a $20 pillow and a custom sofa and we’ll make magic,” says Dawson. “Because style isn’t about what you spend. It’s about knowing how to zhuzh the cheap stuff so it looks like a million bucks.”
Candlesticks
Dawson tells me she doesn’t always have the easiest time finding candlestick pairs at TJ Maxx’s sister stores, HomeGoods and Marshalls, but she often has the best luck at TJ Maxx. “TJ Maxx has candlestick pairs, yes pairs!” she says. “A surprisingly rare find at the sister stores.”
Bathroom Accessories
The right accessories are an easy way to elevate a bathroom, but they can be very expensive. One room that Bryant loves to accessorize with TJ Maxx items is the bathroom. “They have everything from tissue boxes to fancy soaps, towels, and decorative boxes,” she says.
You can even sometimes find upscale brands you’d see at department stores at far better prices.
Stone Decor
Bryant says TJ Maxx is a great spot to find home accessories made of stone, such as marble or quartz, that are generally a lot more expensive at other stores. “I always look for stone accessories like candle dishes, trays, and decorative boxes,” she says. “Anything with weight and texture that adds polish.”
However, she warns against going for the more kitschy items or word art pieces. “I skip the overly themed knick-knacks, but I’m all in when they’ve got great marble or carved stone pieces,” she says.
Area Rugs
Bryant notes that while it’s not always guaranteed, she has found some great area rugs at TJ Maxx. If your local store doesn’t have area rugs, check out the selection online, so it’s easy to do your treasure hunt without leaving the house.
Kitchen Accessories
Looking for some new kitchen accessoires? Whether it’s staples or decor to elevate your kitchen countertop, Bryant finds it all at TJ Maxx. “They always have those large wooden pepper grinders and stellar bowls and kitchen styling accessories,” she says.
So, if you currently have more chic salad bowls than you know what to do with, consider hitting up the store before your next housewarming party.
Coffee Table Books
Need to dress up a tabletop? Are your bookshelves looking slightly bare? While fancy coffee table books don’t come cheap, according to Bryant, TJ Maxx has them at a discount. Whether you’re looking for a colorful cookbook, historic homes, or gorgeous photos of fashion, you can find great options at TJ Maxx.
Bedding and Throws
Whether you’re looking for new bedding for your guest room, a child’s room, or your own bedroom, you’ll find everything from basic sheet sets to cheerful print duvets at TJ Maxx. Don’t forget to add a throw—the selection changes all the time, so you never know what you’ll come across.
