The dress has already been interpreted as kind of a middle finger to men who refer to certain female stars as “popcorn actresses.” Demi Moore said in her Golden Globe acceptance speech last month that a producer had called her a popcorn actress, implying she was only ever going to be good enough for mass-appeal blockbuster fare, not anything of, well, substance.
Clearly Emma has faced similarly reductive feedback as she’s throwing it back in their faces! Not only has she now won two Oscars, she has also evolved into a hell of a producer, just last year knocking out three acclaimed indies: Problemista, I Saw The TV Glow, and A Real Pain. We just love it when someone can turn saltiness into fuel for success!
