Gojira Win ‘Best Metal Performance’ At The 67th Grammy Awards
The french metal quartet Gojira along with opera singer Marina Viotti, and composer Victor Le Masne won the Grammy for ‘Best Metal Performance’ at the 2025 Grammy Awards. The band and company won for their song “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!),” which they performed at the opening ceremony of the 2024 summer Paris Olympic games.
Gojira’s groundbreaking performance cemented them as the first metal band to perform at an Olympic games ceremony. The band’s fiery unrelenting metal performance instantly went viral and inspired the group to release the studio version of their electrifying composition, “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!),” which has amassed nearly 10 million streams on Spotify and now earned them their first Grammy.
Gojira has been nominated for a total of four Grammys throughout their career, three times for ‘Best Metal Performance’ and once for ‘Best Rock Album.’ However, unlike the 64th and 59th Grammy Awards, Gojira finally came out with their very first win at the 67 award ceremony.
Among the other metal nominees this year which included new comers Spiritbox and Knocked Loose, and legacy acts Metallica and Judas Priest, Gojira felt like the rightful winners at this year’s Grammys, purely from how significant their Olympic performance was. Spiritbox, on the other hand, who are one of the fastest rising newer bands in the metal scene, earned their second nomination this year. Had Spiritbox one they would’ve become the first female fronted band to win ‘Best Metal Performance.’ However, Marina Viotti, the opera singer who accompanies Gojira on “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!),” is now the first woman to win in the category since it was established.
