Hazelnut Is the Must-Have Brunette Hair Color of the Season

Brunettes are definitely basking in the spotlight right now, as is evidenced by the super popular moonlights trend and an overall uptick in blonde to brunette transformations. Hazelnut is the newest brunette hair color trending this season, and this dark and dreamy hue is all about keeping things natural with a golden twist.

“This year, we’ve seen a major shift to going back to naturals. In the same way, we’ve also seen people go from lighter to darker,” notes Sarah Ashley, a New York City-based hairstylist and brand ambassador for Remi Cachet. “I think hazelnut hair is particularly popular for the fall and winter because it adds dimension in the colder months, and even in the summer it sits beautifully in the sunlight.”

Here’s everything you need to know about the trending hue.

What Is Hazelnut Hair?

Hazelnut hair color is a medium brown hue with gold undertones. It’s not as deep as some brunette hues but is darker than a true bronde, making it super versatile and flattering.

“Think of an iced latte—a natural-lightened espresso shot with depth and warmth. That’s hazelnut hair color,” Ashley says. “The color has had an uptick in popularity from its natural-looking glow, and it’s a flattering color for many skin tones.”

Who Looks Best With Hazelnut Hair?

Hazelnut hair is a great brunette hue for anyone seeking warm, radiant shades without high contrast. It’s perfect for blondes or brondes who want to go a little deeper in the cooler months, or for darker brunettes who want to lighten up their mane a bit.

“Hazelnut color is a good option for anyone, particularly those with caramel-like undertones which together enhance overall complexion,” Ashley notes. “ The shade blends well with brown or dark blonde roots too, since regrowth will be less noticeable.”

As with many hair hues, this spin on brunette is 100% customizable. Ashley says you can opt to go as light or as dark as you wish. Think of it as pouring milk into your latte, she says. It’s up to you to decide how much of that creamy golden goodness you want!

“You can also add highlights, low lights, and toner—the list goes on,” she notes. “This is so easily achieved with hair extensions too, without the need to color natural hair.”

What to Ask for at the Salon

Your best bet is to seek out some inspiration pics and show your colorist. That way you’re both on the same page and you two can customize the perfect flattering hazelnut hair hue for your complexion, undertones, current hair shade, and even eye color. If that’s not doable, then ask for a medium-tone brunette hair color with warm and golden undertones.

How to Maintain Hazelnut Hair Color

Maintenance depends on your natural hair color. If you’re already brunette then you’ll need fewer salon visits to refresh your hue and infuse those golden undertones. In that case, a monthly toner treatment is probably good enough. Those with ultra-dark hair, blondies, and gray strands will probably want to visit every four to six weeks to touch up their roots.

“It’s always important to do regular masks for hydration,” Ashley says. “Also consider glosses to keep the shine vibrant and use color-safe shampoo and conditioner—always!”

There are at-home toners you can try if you’d like to get the golden look without a salon visit, though sometimes it’s nice to see a professional and get a gorgeous blowout. We’ll leave that choice up to you!
