The sequel to 1996’s Twister will storm into movie theaters this summer and fans got a first look at the action in an action-packed Super Bowl trailer. The harrowing clip teases Twisters, which stars Glen Powell as a self-proclaimed tornado wrangler and Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos as scientists testing a new weather technology.
The film, directed by Lee Isaac Chung, will be released July 19. It also stars Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, Sasha Lane, Maura Tierney, Katy O’Brian, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Harry Hadden-Paton, Nik Dodani, and Tunde Adebimpe.
The official synopsis reads, “Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.”
Twisters is a follow-up to Jan de Bont’s beloved 1996 blockbuster Twister, which starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as storm chasers. Chung is best known for making indie film Minari. The script for Twisters was written by Mark L. Smith based on characters created by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin, who wrote the 1996 movie. The movie was produced by Patrick Crowley, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Steven Spielberg.
Powell most recently appeared in rom-com Anyone But You alongside Sydney Sweeney and will also star in Netflix’s Hit Man this summer. He told Rolling Stone that despite his ongoing rise to fame, he tries keep living his life normally.
“My favorite thing that’s happening now, because I think I’ve played in so many different boxes and genres, is I can tell when someone walks up to me what role they probably recognize me from based on their energy and their age,” Powell said. “It’s very fun. My favorite, though, and one that throws me off constantly, is when I’m walking by a construction site, and a guy’s like, ‘Hey, dude, you mind if I ask you a question?’ I’m like, ‘Oh, it’s going to be Top Gun.’ He’s like, ‘Are you in Scream Queens?’ It’s hilarious. Also, the number of professional athletes, the biggest, most terrifying men you’ve ever seen in your whole life, are all Scream Queens fans. It surprises me every time.”
