Happy St. Patrick’s Day, my dearest Strandistarians! Today, Americans celebrate their Irish heritage, and no you don’t need actual Irish ancestry to join in the festivities. I like to think there’s a little Irish in all of us. Wear green, eat some cottage pie or corned beef, down a pint or two of Guinness, and solve today’s Strands!
Strands is the newest game in the New York Times’ stable of puzzle games. It’s a fun twist on classic word search games. Every day we’re given a new theme and then tasked with uncovering all the words on the grid that fit that theme, including a spangram that spans two sides of the board. One of these words is the spangram which crosses from one side of the grid to another and reveals even more about the day’s theme.
Spoilers ahead.

Today’s Strands Breakdown
I’ve actually never heard the term SPOONERISMS before, so this was a deeply confusing Strands for me. I didn’t understand the theme at all until I looked up the spangram and learned that spoonerisms are when you accidentally swap the starting sounds of two words, coming up with a new and somewhat humorous phrase and meaning. For instance, crushing blows becomes BLUSHING CROWS and wedding bells become BEDDING WELLS and chicken strips become STRICKEN CHIPS and so forth.
