Flowers are often a lesson in appreciating fleeting beauty. Some of the most awe-inspiring flowers—like daylilies and cherry blossoms—have some of the shortest bloom times, teaching us to appreciate their presence while we can. However, in your own garden, you may be looking for a bit more payoff for all your hard work (and a bit less of a meditation on the temporary nature of life). So, if you’re looking to plant hardy shrubs that will bring long-lasting blooms and beauty to your garden, here are some great options.
Hydrangeas

A longtime garden favorite for many reasons, hydrangeas often continue to bloom long after other flowering shrubs and perennials have stopped. Panicle hydrangeas, in particular, can offer three or more months of flowering, and they’re one of the easiest and most reliable varieties. Just make sure these plants get at least four to six hours of sunlight each day to ensure they’re strong, sturdy, and thriving.
Rose of Sharon

Rose of Sharon is one of the most popular hibiscus species, producing large, trumpet-shaped blooms that add a tropical touch to the garden. While the individual blooms only last for a day or so, the shrub produces flowers all summer long—and it doesn’t need much maintenance to do so. The shrub prefers full sun and is drought- and heat-tolerant, and when properly cared for, it can last for 20 to 30 years.
Rose of Sharon is considered invasive in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Tennessee.
Landscape Roses

Landscape roses are hardy, disease-resistant flowering shrubs that can thrive in various settings with very little maintenance. Combine that with their ability to continuously bloom all summer long, and you get a great return on your investment. Depending on the variety you choose and the look you’re going for, these versatile and hardy plants can be grown as privacy hedges, ground covers, or border plantings.

Weigela will attract pollinators with its many clusters of vibrant flowers, while resisting deer visits. While some weigela varieties stop blooming after early summer, many varieties (like Sonic Bloom) will rebloom throughout summer and into fall.
Salvia ‘Hot Lips’

Salvia ‘Hot Lips’ is a bushy shrub that produces striking two-toned red and white flowers. The shrub, commonly known as Baby Sage, blooms prolifically from late spring through fall, sometimes continuing until the first frost. In addition to being drought-tolerant, pollinator-friendly, and aromatic, the plant’s flowers can sometimes change color depending on the temperature, adding yet another layer of intrigue.
