How to Style Denim Jumpsuits, According to an Expert

We here at Real Simple are constantly looking for ways to simplify everyday life, especially when it comes to our wardrobes. Our latest obsession? Denim jumpsuits. “The denim jumpsuit is definitely having a moment, and it’s easy to see why,” John Smith, Vice President of Design at Poshele explains, adding, “We’re seeing a resurgence of ‘90s fashion, and the jumpsuit perfectly embodies that cool, effortless vibe.”

The simplistic look and breathable, comfy material makes denim jumpsuits one of the best clothing pieces to have in your wardrobe as you transition from winter to spring. “They’re a fantastic year-round option,” Smith shares, adding, “For spring and summer, opt for lighter washes, shorter sleeves, or even sleeveless styles.”

With this in mind, we took to a variety of retailers to round up the best denim jumpsuits on the market, and we found timeless styles from beloved brands like Gap, Zara, Old Navy, and more from $40. Plus, we also asked Smith for the expert tips on how to style a denim jumpsuit so you can wear one to the office, date nights, or for errands to the grocery store.

Best Denim Jumpsuits

Banana Republic Factory Tailored Denim Jumpsuit

Banana Republic Factory

At first glance, this jumpsuit from Banana Republic Factory appears more utilitarian, but it features subtle details that also give it a classic, stylish flair. It’s designed with a lapel collar, front button closure, and a tie at the waist that provide you a more fitted, flattering look. The jumpsuit also features trendy drop shoulders, chest, side, and back pockets, and long sleeves with button cuffs that you can wear as is, or you can roll them up for a more casual and laidback look. When it’s cold outside, Smith suggests layering up to achieve a comfortable and chic look. “A cozy sweater, a chic cardigan, a tailored blazer, or even a cool leather jacket will instantly elevate your jumpsuit,” he explains, and furthermore shares that warm boots or closed-toed shoes, like ballet flats, are also great styling choices as well.

Old Navy Button-Front Cami Jumpsuit

Old Navy

You’ll want to wear this denim jumpsuit from the spring to the summer. For starters, the jumpsuit has feminine accents like a sweetheart neckline, front button closure, and smocked back that make it more elevated than other options out there. It also is designed with adjustable straps to alter the fit to your liking as well as diagonal hip pockets to conveniently carry your phone, keys, and other small essentials. Not to mention, the jumpsuit is also made from a durable 100 percent cotton denim, so you’ll have it in your rotation for years to come. Smith suggests pairing sleeveless jumpsuits with summery sandals, comfy sneakers, or a pair of espadrilles to complete your look.

Gap Belted Denim Jumpsuit

Gap

Make a statement at work, casual outings, and beyond in this timeless option from Gap. The jumpsuit has plenty of eye-catching details to wear it as is, including a half-zip closure in the front, a pointed collar, and patchwork-style pockets in both the front and the back. In addition to these accents, it also features a tie-waist belt that not only looks fashionable, but also can be tied loosely or tightly for a custom fit. When you want to spruce up your jumpsuit outfit, Smith says that heeled shoes, like nude pumps, and subtle accessories, like a straw hat, can take it to the next level.

Free People We the Free Marci Denim Jumpsuit

Nordstrom

Who said casual couldn’t be cool and trendy at the same time? This Free People jumpsuit features a full button front closure and tons of embroidered detailing that creates an edgy yet laidback flair. The pants have a straight-leg design that lands right at the ankle, and the upper portion features a spread collar and short sleeves that are versatile for any season. But the most impressive feature of the jumpsuit is the elasticized sides, which hug the waist and provide a flattering fit. The design of styles like this one is best paired with casual footwear, according to Smith, who explained, “When it comes to a relaxed, dressed-down look, sneakers are the ultimate way to give that laid-back chic feel to your denim jumpsuit outfit.”

Zara Z1975 Long Denim Jumpsuit

Zara

If you’re someone who appreciates clothes with a vintage vibe to them, this Zara jumpsuit is a must-have in your wardrobe. The dark wash one-piece is designed with a lapel collar, a zipper and button front closure, and a straight-leg bottom for easy styling with a variety of shoes and accessories. It also features side pockets and stylish back patch pockets, too. Though you can pair this jumpsuit with just about anything, Smith says “a dark wash denim jumpsuit with a shirt collar can make you look extraordinarily voguish if you pair it with platform clogs and a coordinating tote bag.”

Jessica Simpson Denim Jumpsuit

Walmart

For something more comfortable and casual, look no further than this jumpsuit from Jessica Simpson’s collection at Walmart. The one-piece is made from a blend of cotton, polyester, viscose, and spandex, which allows for more stretch, flexibility, and freedom of movement as you wear it. It also has generously-sized slant pockets, a zipper closure, and slightly flared legs that pair perfectly with platform sandals, chunky heels, or sneakers, too. When opting for a jumpsuit with either short or long sleeves, Smith says, “Don’t be afraid to experiment with lighter colors or fun prints.”

Wrangler Trouser Jumpsuit

Wrangler

When it comes to styling this trendy jumpsuit from Wrangler, the options are endless. In contrast to the straight-leg design of most denim jumpsuits, this one features a wide-leg, trouser style leg that makes it look like it’s straight off the runway. The pleated trouser legs provide a tailored look, and the sleeveless design, pearl snap button closure, and spread collar give it polished sophistication. In addition to these noteworthy accents, the jumpsuit also features signature stitching in both the front chest pocket and two back pockets as well as the brand’s iconic logo patch on the back. Though it can be worn casually, this jumpsuit is made to dress up, and Smith suggests that you “layer with a black blazer, add black pumps and a sleek shoulder bag, and finish with silver jewelry for a sophisticated look.”

Universal Thread Tailored Denim Jumpsuit

Target

You would never guess that this chic one-piece is actually a denim jumpsuit. While most denim jumpsuits have deeper necklines, the crewneck style of this option gives it a unique flair that is more on the modest side—yet still fashion-forward. It has a full zipper closure that makes getting in and out of it super easy, while the belt loops allow you to style it with your favorite belt or even a scarf for a fun touch. To keep must-haves like your phone or lip balm on hand, the jumpsuit is also designed with two front and two back pockets. “The classic way to wear a sleeveless denim jumpsuit is to wear it over a vibrant solid T-shirt, sweatshirt, or turtleneck,” Smith says, adding, “Plain pieces bring out the jumpsuit’s flair much better, but you can experiment with textured tops, striped t-shirts, or floral print shirts as well.”
