I Need Kid-Friendly Breakfast Ideas

ON THIS WEEK’S episode of Dinner SOS, test kitchen director and host Chris Morocco is joined by cookbook author Ali Slagle to brainstorm breakfast ideas that will help make mornings a breeze for our caller Liz.

Liz loves cookbooks and tries to make a hundred new recipes every year. Her three kids often get to enjoy the fruits of her labor, but as she gets ready for them to head back to school, she’s dreading the breakfast part of their morning routine. She’s looking for inspiration for quick, nourishing recipes to help her kids start their days on a strong note.

Liz mentions that she loves the recipes in Ali Slagle’s cookbook I Dream of Dinner (so you don’t have to), so Chris recruits Ali to help Liz dream of breakfast. Ali suggests that Liz try this recipe for Granola Scones, which are packed with whole grains, nuts, seeds, and dried fruit, and satisfy the craving for a baked good in the morning while providing hours of energy. They can also be made ahead, frozen, and defrosted in a pinch. Ali also suggests making smoothies, which are both filling and nutritious, and leaning on frozen fruit like bananas and mango chunks as the base. She shares recipes to use as inspiration, like this one with almonds, kale, and banana and another with blueberries, dates, and cocoa.

Listen now to hear if Liz is able to conquer back-to-school breakfast with help from Ali and Chris.
