Ice Cream Products Sold Nationwide Recalled For Listeria

Before you reach for some ice cream to beat the heat, you may want to take a closer look at all of the ice cream products in your freezer. Per an announcement from the Food & Drug Administration, Totally Cool, Inc. is recalling multiple brands of ice cream products because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The Maryland-based company produces items for brands including Friendly’s, Hershey’s Ice Cream, Jeni`s, ChipWich, and more, and each of those brands are included in this recall.

The now-recalled ice cream products were distributed nationwide through various retail companies, including Whole Foods, Walmart, Target, and more. The items were sold both in-stores and online. As mentioned above, the recalled ice cream products are sold under several different brand names, and more than 65 products from various brands are impacted.

The ice cream brands impacted by this recall are listed below:

  • Friendly’s
  • Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery
  • Hershey’s Ice Cream

It’s important to note that not all of the ice cream products produced by the above brands are impacted by this recall. In fact, this recall mostly pertains to ice cream sandwiches and ice cream cakes, though there are some pints involved. Consumers can determine if anything in their freezer is subject to this recall by comparing the date and plant information on the product, using the photos linked above.

This recall was initiated because an FDA sampling of Totally Cool, Inc. products discovered the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

While no illnesses related to this recall have been reported to date, Totally Cool, Inc. has ceased production and distribution of the affected items, and “continues its investigation and is taking preventive actions,” as noted by the FDA.

Per the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals may experience symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The FDA is strongly encouraging consumers to check their freezers for any of the recalled items and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, or dispose of them immediately. Consumers with questions about this recall may contact Totally Cool, Inc. at 410-363- 7801, between 8am and 4pm Eastern Standard Time, Monday to Friday. Consumers can also email regulatory@totallycoolicecream.com with questions or concerns.
