Eugene Levy has enjoyed a major career resurgence thanks to “Schitt’s Creek,” the CBC sitcom he co-created and -starred in with his son Dan Levy that became a cultural phenomenon when Netflix brought it to the United States. But while Levy continues to join high-profile projects like the upcoming Season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building,” the 77-year-old comedian says he is starting to think about the end of his entertainment career.
In a new interview with The Independent to promote Season 2 of his Apple TV+ reality series “The Reluctant Traveler,” Levy opened up about the possibility of stepping away from performing in the near future.
“I’m not afraid of retirement,” Levy said. “I love it when I have nothing on the agenda, I really do. I love getting up and the only big decision is where to go for lunch. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
Levy said he’s still interested in working on select projects that fit his schedule, but is less likely to take on roles that require large time commitments.
“I’ll take on jobs that I find really interesting, and jobs that won’t be too time-consuming — but I don’t think I’d get into another series where you’re working six days a week for five months straight,” he said.“Not ruling anything out. Including retirement, but I think there’s still a few jobs in me left.”
While Levy’s comments suggest that his days of being a series regular on major sitcoms are almost behind him, the actor has recently teased that a return to the world of “Schitt’s Creek” could still be in the cards.
“I know my son Daniel has said this, we’d love to get together with these people again and take the show and the characters to yet another level,” Levy said in a February 2023 interview with Radio Times. “There’s nothing in the works right now to be honest, but you know, we’ve never stopped thinking about what might happen down the line. We’re certainly open to anything, I think when the idea that is the right idea presents itself we’ll probably act on it, I guess.”
