A fedora hat worn by Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom sold for $630,000 at auction Friday, more than doubling its pre-sale estimate and breaking the record for priciest Indiana Jones-worn fedora.
The fedora was among the highlights of the Prop Store’s August auction of film and television memorabilia, which also included items from Home Alone, Scream, Return of the Jedi and more.
The fedora — which had a pre-auction estimate of $250,000 to $500,000 — came from the collection of the late stunt performer Dean Ferrandini, who doubled for Harrison Ford on Temple of Doom.
“This fedora was made specifically for the second installment of the Indiana Jones series and matches film shots, production stills, and behind-the-scenes footage of Ford in the village set on location in Sri Lanka, in the mine cart chase shot at Elstree Studios, and in the river sequence shot in the U.S.,” Prop Store said of the hat.
“Created by Herbert Johnson Hat Company in London, who also did the hats for Raiders of the Lost Ark, the fedora was a slight update on the original film’s version. Costume designer Anthony Powell and assistant costume designer Joanna Johnston worked closely with Herbert Johnson on the update that incorporated a more tapered crown than the prior film.”
Ferrandini also wore the fedora during a raft sequence when he stunt-doubled as Indiana Jones, and ultimately came into possession of the item. Ferrandini died in August 2023, and Friday’s auction marked the first time this fedora had come up for sale, 40 years after Temple of Doom’s release.
However, this isn’t the first Temple of Doom fedora to hit the auction block: In 2021, another hat created for that film — though not tied to any specific scene or sequence — was sold in a Prop Store auction for $300,000. Prior to Friday’s sale The previous record holder for most expensive Indiana Jones fedora bought at auction was a Raiders of the Lost Ark-era hat that sold for $500,000 in 2015.
