Inside Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck’s 2003 Split – What They Now Say REALLY Happened!

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are opening up about what exactly went wrong on the first go at their relationship.

Y2kers will remember that before Jen and Ben rekindled their flame in 2021, they had a highly talked about relationship in the early 2000s. The two were engaged, but in 2003, their relationship went by the wayside… And now they’re opening up about the final few days they shared together back then!

In her new documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told, which was released alongside her album and musical This Is Me… Now, and is streaming on Amazon Prime, the Selena star dishes all! She says she and her love were actually on the cusp of saying “I do” before they “crumbled”:

“Ben and I, we broke up three days before our wedding. We had a big wedding planned — 14 ushers and bridesmaids — and three days before, we just crumbled under the pressure.”

OMG. Three days?!?! Imagine that… All that planning?! Oof.

Ben, who also appeared in the doc, added that part of the reason they separated was because of the “massive amount of scrutiny” surrounding their “private life.” Yeah, they were definitely the talk of the town… Their relationship through the paparazzi’s perspective was even the focus of J.Lo’s 2002 music video for Jenny from the Block!

But it wasn’t a total loss… The couple agreed that breaking up helped them to do a LOT of self reflection and improvement — which helped for when they met again in 2021. But you bet it was hard! Jen shared:

“For all those years, it was really hard because I didn’t just feel like I lost the love of my life, I felt like I lost the best friend that I ever had. And I couldn’t talk for so many years, and that was the hardest part.”

She said she was “angry” for a while, “but that heartbreak set both of us on a course to figuring ourselves out to being better people.”

Awww.

It’s a lovely narrative where no one has to be the villain, no one broke up with anyone, no third party caused any problems. But is it the truth? We mean…

Ben long ago talked about how he fell in love with Jennifer Garner while filming Daredevil in 2002 — over a YEAR before the breakup. They can blame the limelight now, but COME ON! There’s no way that’s all it was!

But hey, if this is what J.Lo has decided the reason will forever be, if it allows her to forgive and forget — mostly forget — who are we to say different, right? Because now the old flames are back and better than ever. Jennifer beamed:

“I feel like I came out the other side. I’ve made it through. I’ve made something good of my life. I’m proud of that.”
