Mountain Dew and Papa Johns Release a New Dirty Soda

Mountain Dew and Papa Johns are ready to shake up the soda scene for summer.

On Wednesday, the pizza chain and soda giant announced that they are releasing a new ‘Cini Dirty Soda, kit, which they say is “a bold twist on the dirty soda craze.” 

In case you’ve been living under a beverage rock, dirty sodas became all the rage in 2024. As Food & Wine’s own Amelia Schwartz explained last year, while there’s no exact definition for a “dirty soda,” it’s understood that dirty soda is “one that’s mixed or topped with syrup, juice, or cream. Most soda shops have a menu full of combinations, similar to how a Starbucks has specialty drinks and seasonal items.” 

Schwartz noted that the wildly popular soda shop Swig offers mixes like its Dirty Dr Pepper, made with a Dr Pepper base and coconut syrup, and “Island Time,” a drink made with Fresca, passionfruit syrup, fresh orange, mango puree, and coconut cream. 

As for how the drink became so popular, much of the credit goes to the stars of Hulu’s original reality show, “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” which follows the lives of a group of Mormon women in Utah. On the show, the women explain how central Swig is to their lives and the rest of the Latter-day Saints community, as they do not consume alcohol but still enjoy a fun beverage. As one of the stars, Demi Engemann, shared, “We don’t drink alcohol or do drugs, so it’s kind of our vice.”

For this new collab, Mountain Dew shared that the ‘Cini Dirty Soda’ brings together its “vibrant citrus flavor with Papa Johns’ signature pepperoncini kick, culminating in a fizzy, tangy concoction that’s as addictive as your latest binge-watching obsession.” So yes, it combines the best parts of pizza and soda in a single glass.
