The Celtics will officially have to manage another injury as they go deeper into the 2025 playoffs. Per ESPN’s Shams Charania, after Jayson Tatum took a hard fall in the Game 1 win over the Magic, he had further testing done on his right wrist.
“Jayson Tatum underwent an MRI on that right wrist in the last 24 hours,” Charania said. “He has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his shooting wrist. It’s believed to be a pain tolerance injury. Something that the Celtics will be managing day-to-day.
“His status is somewhat up in the air for Game 2 on Wednesday. It’s very hard for a guy like Jayson Tatum to miss any period of time. He loves playing basketball. But that injury clearly might be something that lingers for a little bit.”
Tatum is officially listed as doubtful for Game 2 of the series with what the team called a right distal radius bone bruise. That’s a tough blow for the reigning champs going forward even beyond Wednesday’s game.
Tatum landed on his wrist after a flagrant foul from the Magic’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in the fourth quarter. He was down on the ground for a while before getting up to finish out the Game 1 victory.
The Celtics are already dealing with a different bone bruise in Jaylen Brown’s right knee. Brown played through the injury in Game 1, and while he had a slow start, he looked more like himself in the second half. So that’s a pair of injuries to both the Celtics’ star players just one game into the playoffs.
Tatum dealt with a left wrist issue back throughout the 2022 playoffs that led to an NBA Finals berth. He didn’t speak about it much as the playoffs were ongoing, but spoke afterwards about how he needed to get injections to keep playing. At this point, it’s unclear the severity of this bone bruise in his right wrist.
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said after Tuesday’s practice that Tatum is day-to-day. The C’s currently lead the series 1-0, but if Tatum is limited going forward, that will certainly have an affect on their playoff hopes this year.
