Between fitted leather jackets and skintight jeans, John Varvatos has long embodied a rock-and-roll sensibility. Now, the designer is collaborating with the John Lennon estate on a new collection, featuring graphic t-shirts, button-downs, and even suits. The collection, available to shop now, ranges from $168 for t-shirts to $3,498 for a suede coat.
“The John Lennon x John Varvatos collection pays homage to a true icon, whose impact on music and style continues to resonate profoundly. Beyond his legendary musical contributions, John Lennon possessed an inimitable sense of personal style that was characterized by an unwavering authenticity and artistic spirit,” said the brand in a statement.
Some of the pieces are obvious homages to John Lennon. There are two graphic t-shirts and a cashmere sweater featuring Lennon’s likeness, as well as a green “New York City” t-shirt, inspired by the t-shirt worn in Bob Gruen’s classic photo of the late Beatles icon. There are also linen button-down shirts, featuring Lennon’s sketches, signatures, and self-portraits.
There are also some more subtle nods to Lennon; the dip-dyed suede coat and suit jacket features Lennon quotes on the inside of the jacket for a quieter tribute to John Lennon’s signature style.
“It’s been incredible seeing this limited collection come to life. The pieces seek to capture the essence of Lennon’s singular aesthetic, celebrating his courage to express himself without reservation. The collection encourages self-expression and celebrates the enduring power of individuality,” said Karl Aberg, VP of creative for John Varvatos.
John Varvatos was founded in 1999 by the eponymous designer, who had stints at Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren before starting his own label. Rock music has long been a throughline for Varvatos, and in 2013, he compiled a book featuring some of the most stylish musicians in rock history, ranging from David Bowie and the Beatles to My Morning Jacket and Blondie.
