Katie Taylor v Chantelle Cameron: ‘Crunch point’ for Croke Park talks

Discussions to hold a trilogy fight between Katie Taylor and Chantelle Cameron at Croke Park are reaching a “crunch point”.

Matchroom CEO Frank Smith said the Aviva Stadium and 3Arena are both under consideration as alternative venues.

Ireland’s Taylor defeated Cameron at the 3Arena in November to cancel out the English fighter’s victory in May.

“If we want to look at a May event it is really in the next week or so we need to get an answer,” Smith said.

Smith added that “conversations are going” with the GAA [Gaelic Games Association] about stating a historic trilogy fight at the 80,000 seater stadium in Dublin.

Cameron inflicted a first professional defeat on Taylor in May in an epic fight, and the home fighter gained revenge in Dublin in November by winning the rematch. Both of those bouts took place at the 3Arena.

Discussions over previous fights at Croke Park have fallen through.

“We had a lot of public discussions back in the day when we looked at it,” Smith told BBC Sport NI.

“Discussions are going on in the background, as well as with the government.

“They are not discussions that take a couple of days. As with any government around the world it takes a period of time.

“The focus for us will be, if we can’t do Croke Park then we will look at the Aviva Stadium or the 3Arena.”
