Sony’s newest Spider-Man spin-off, Madame Web, is in theaters now, and it’s off to a slow start. The movie released on February 14 in the US, earning $6 million for its first day and $2.2 million on Thursday for a two-day total of $8.2 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
For comparison, the Bob Marley biopic One Love also opened on Wednesday stateside and has so far made $17.9 million after two days. Numbers for Friday are not yet available.
Madame Web is projected to earn between $25 million and $27 million over the six-day period covering February 14-19 for the Valentine’s Day to Presidents Day long weekend. It’s likely to finish second to One Love, which is expected to make between $30 million and $35 million for the six-day period in the US.
According to THR, Madame Web had a budget of $80 million, though the site’s sources said it could actually be as high as $120 million–and that’s before advertising expenses are factored in. When the long weekend’s final figures come in, it won’t necessarily be easy to compare to Sony’s other Spider Man universe movies or superhero films in general due to the six-day reporting window as opposed to a traditional Friday-Sunday opening weekend.
Madame Web stars Dakota Johnson as a clairvoyant paramedic, with a cast that also includes Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, and Adam Scott.
Beyond Madame Web and the Tom Holland Spider-Man movies, some of Sony’s other Spider-Man universe films have included Venom, Venom 2, Morbius, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Spider Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Venom 3 is set for release later this year and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is also on the way.
