And just like that… Samantha Jones has gifted us with another reminder of why we love her!
Kim Cattrall has not had much at all nice to say about Sex and the City over the past few years. Her infamous feud with costar Sarah Jessica Parker has overshadowed most of the conversation. And when she has reflected on that time, it’s all been disappointingly negative.
That’s why it’s so wonderful to hear her remembering some really beautiful aspects of the show — and her Emmy-winning role.

Speaking to The Times on Thursday, she admitted she originally turned down SATC. FOUR TIMES, in fact! Why? She laughingly admitted:
“Self-inflicted ageism.”
She really didn’t believe — at 41 years old — that audiences were interested in seeing a woman her age portrayed as having an active sex life, not that anyone would want to watch! Thankfully she found out pretty quickly how wrong she was!
“Well, that changed — 40 became sexy. It became, ‘Man, let’s have more of that.’”
Yasss! Sex and the City honestly probably still doesn’t get enough credit for how bold a character Samantha was on TV at that point. The idea women taking charge in the bedroom — not just being conquests for male characters — was still a novel one in the late ’90s, believe it or not. And for one of those women to show how vivacious and vibrant women over 40 still were? It meant a lot to a lot of women.
Of course, Samantha had her critics at the time. There are always those who detest the idea of a woman as sexually adventurous as men are expected to be. Well, Kim may not often speak so glowingly about the show these days, but when it comes to the portrayal of Samantha Jones, she’ll defend it to her dying breath:
“She wasn’t a nymphomaniac — well, some people might have thought she was — but she was just enjoying the main course. Everyone else was nibbling on the appetizers when she was going for the steak. And it was always on her terms — that I always insisted on.”
It warms our hearts to hear Kim still has so much respect for Samantha and what she meant to fans — despite what Sex and the City ended up meaning for her personally.
