Kim Kardashian Signs First-Look Deal with 20th TV
Being “delicate” with Ryan Murphy has certainly paid off for Kim Kardashian. The actress and reality-TV star is deepening her relationship with studio 20th Television under a new first-look deal.
Kim K. already has “The Kardashians” on Hulu (owned by Disney, which owns 20th) heading into its fifth season, and entered (real) acting with Murphy’s “American Horror Story: Delicate,” a 20th TV production. She’s set to star in Murphy’s upcoming legal drama “All’s Fair,” also at 20th.
Now, the studio can give her a parking space. Kardashian will develop projects that span drama, comedy, and limited series under the multi-year deal.
Her first project under the deal is a collaboration with “black-ish” creator Kenya Barris called “Group Chat.” It is currently in development for Hulu and is based on the NYT bestselling book “The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness” from author La La Anthony.
Anthony will star in the series and executive produce. “Group Chat” is created and EP’d by Barris and his Khalabo Ink Society, and Kardashian will also executive produce the project. Adam Kassan serves as an executive producer on behalf of Khalabo Ink Society. “Group Chat” is a co-production between 20th TV and BET Studios.
“I’m incredibly interested in telling stories that are personal, complicated, relevant, from my own experiences and those familiar to me,” Kardashian said in a statement. “I had a front row seat to working with the exceptional team at 20th Television during ‘American Horror Story: Delicate’, and I’m so excited to dive into developing my first wave of television projects with the team led by Karey Burke and Eric Schrier, and to continue working alongside Craig Erwich and his entire group at Hulu and Disney.”
“Delicate” was the 12th and latest in the “AHS” anthology series of horror stories; Kardashian starred alongside Emma Roberts in a take on the “Rosemary’s Baby” story.
“Kim is a multi-hyphenate in every sense of the word, who has her finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist while simultaneously helping to define it. Her success in television with our teams – from ‘The Kardashians’ to ‘American Horror Story: Delicate’ – coupled with her ability to capture the imaginations of millions, puts her in the unique position to develop and produce stories that will undoubtedly pierce the culture,” said Karey Burke, president of 20th Television and Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group.
As for Anthony, she’s currently starring in “BMF” on Starz and “The Chi,” and she most recently starred in “The Bad Guardian” with Melissa Joan Hart. Her book “The Love Playbook” from 2015 climbed to number 1 on the New York Times Best Sellers List, and it was followed by a second book, “The Power Playbook.”
Barris most recently directed “Diarra From Detroit” for BET+ and “The Vince Staples Show” for Netflix.
