Netflix New Releases: April 2024

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.

Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

Launching April 5 is Scoop, a feature dramatization of perhaps one of the most awkward interviews ever televised. Directed by Philip Martin from a script by playwright Peter Moffat, Scoop depicts Prince Andrew’s infamous 2019 BBC interview with journalist Emily Maitlis. The car crash interview saw the prince attempt to explain his relationship with the late convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, as well as defend himself from allegations of sexual assault. The film sees Gillian Anderson play Maitlis and Rufus Sewell play Prince Andrew.

On April 19, Zack Snyder offers the world the second part of his $150 million-plus sci-fi epic Rebel Moon. The first part, Part One: A Child of Fire, debuted on Netflix on Dec. 22, 2023, and was among the top 10 most viewed films on the streamer for that year, according to the company. Part Two: The Scargiver picks up the action with Kora and her team seeking to defend their home against the worst ravages of the Motherworld. The second part again features a large ensemble cast, including Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae and Ray Fisher. Cary Elwes and Anthony Hopkins also reprise their roles from the first film.

Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner’s DC comic book characters the Dead Boy Detectives, a pair of supernatural investigators who appeared in The Sandman series, get their own spinoff live-action series, which debuts on Netflix on April 25. The show is led by George Rexstrew, who plays Edwin Payne, and Jayden Revri as Charles Rowland. The cast includes Kassius Nelson, Briana Cuoco and Ruth Connell. Dead Boy Detectives was originally set to launch on Max but moved to Netflix in February 2023. Gaiman’s The Sandman already lives on Netflix, and the celebrated author confirmed that both that show and Dead Boy Detectives will share the same universe.

Movies added to Netflix in April include American Graffiti, Baby Driver, Battleship, Born on the Fourth of July, Glass, Happy Gilmore, Hotel Transylvania 1 & 2, Inside Man, Inside Man: Most Wanted, The Land Before Time, The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, One Piece Film: Red, Role Models, Split, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, The Theory of Everything, Wild Things and You’ve Got Mail.
