Meta Platforms (META) CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly is building a team of 50 AI experts aimed at beating the company’s tech rivals in achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI).

AGI is AI with a human level of cognitive function, including the ability to self-teach.

Citing people familiar with Zuckerberg’s plans, Bloomberg reported that the Facebook founder has been “frustrated with Meta Platforms Inc.’s shortfalls in AI.” The new team, being built from AI researchers and engineers, has been referred to internally at Meta as a “superintelligence group” and will sit near him at Meta’s headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif.

Zuckerberg Reportedly Frustrated Over Llama 4 LLM

Zuckerberg’s “desire to micromanage the recruitment effort is driven in part by frustration over the quality of and response to Llama 4,” Meta’s latest large language model (LLM), the report said. The Wall Street Journal reported last month that Meta was pushing back the launch of its “Behemoth” AI model, the new version of Llama 4, amid concerns about whether enough improvements had been made compared to previous iterations.

In late April, the social media giant said that it planned to boost its capital expenditures this year to $64 billion to $72 billion to grow its AI capacity.

Meta didn’t immediately respond to an Investopedia request for comment.

Meta shares, which entered Tuesday up nearly 20% this year, are about 1% higher in premarket trading.
