When you think of sandwiches and movies, there’s usually one film that will immediately surface in your mind.
With its iconic scene in Katz’s Delicatessen — where Meg Ryan loudly demonstrates to Billy Crystal that a woman’s acting could easily fool him — When Harry Met Sally earned its place as one of the greatest rom-coms of all time. Fans of the movie will be thrilled to learn that its stars have reconvened 36 years later for an updated rendition of our favorite deli-centric scene, and it’s all thanks to Hellmann’s.
The condiment brand has officially revealed its 2025 Super Bowl commercial, calling on Ryan and Crystal for a quick clip that recreates the classic moment — albeit with more mayo involved — and a star-studded surprise at the end.
In the video, the duo is sitting down for sandwiches at Katz’s. Except Ryan’s sandwich needs a little something extra, so she adds some mayonnaise (Hellmann’s brand, of course). From there, she has the exact same reaction she did in the deli decades before, except, as Crystal points out, it’s “real” this time. Hellmann’s nails the balance of updated details and nostalgic throwbacks in the commercial: Meg Ryan’s hair is no longer permed, but Billy Crystal is wearing his now-famous sweater from the movie.
Katz’s reputation extends well beyond When Harry Met Sally. The restaurant has been a core part of the Manhattan food scene since opening in 1888. The deli is known for traditional Jewish foods like matzo ball soup, latkes, and chopped liver, but it’s undoubtedly most famous for its smoked meats—especially the pastrami. A pastrami sandwich at Katz’s is piled high with fall-apart tender, cured and smoked brisket, and usually served with housemade pickles on the side.
While mustard is typically the traditional condiment of choice for a pastrami sandwich, you could certainly add mayo if you’re so inclined. (I don’t think there should be any rules when it comes to condiments on a sandwich). But if that proposal has you up in arms, don’t worry; Meg Ryan is adding mayo to a turkey sandwich in the Super Bowl commercial, which seems fitting considering she opts for the same order in the original scene.
Anyone who has been particularly tuned in may have noticed that Hellmann’s released a teaser for its commercial just a few days ago, which confirms what Ryan’s exact sandwich order is in the clip: turkey on rye, with a number of very specific accoutrements like two whole lettuce leaves, paper-thin tomato slices, and pickles sliced lengthwise, with mayo on the side.
Even outside of their creative works, these two legendary actors have sandwich opinions. While speaking with Food & Wine, Crystal noted that putting “the best mayonnaise with a good BLT on sourdough toast, that’s a lovely sandwich also.” So if you can’t book a trip to New York sometime soon, that might be the easiest way to make use of some Hellmann’s at home — and it would be a perfect food for game day.
Fans will see a 30-second cut of the commercial airing during the Big Game, but Hellmann’s has also released a longer 60-second version that audiences can view online. Either video will feature the core stars and storyline you expect, plus a surprise appearance from one other A-lister at the end. Instead of an unknown bystander commenting “I’ll have what she’s having” after Meg Ryan has her moment, the Hellmann’s camera cuts to none other than Sydney Sweeney to deliver the iconic line.
