Meta Platforms (META) shares gained 2% in intraday trading Thursday as the tech giant announced an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, Meta AI, that is integrated into Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The AI assistant could compete with Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google Gemini chatbot.
The AI assistant is built on Meta’s most advanced AI model, Llama 3, which runs on Nvidia’s (NVDA) chips. The company says it “believe[s] Meta AI is now the most intelligent AI assistant you can use for free.”
The company is rolling out Meta AI in English in more than a dozen countries outside of the U.S. including Australia, Canada, and others. Meta said it plans to expand its availability. The company first announced Meta AI in September of 2023.
Meta AI uses real-time information and offers a generative AI (GenAI) image creator, the company said. The AI assistant is integrated into Meta’s platforms including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Meta also announced a meta.ai website that could rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
The company’s shares were up over 2% to $504.58 around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. They’ve gained more than 42% since the start of the year.
Meta is set to report its first-quarter 2024 earnings after the bell on Wednesday, April 24, when it is expected to provide more updates about its AI initiatives.
