Metrograph Unveils Biannual Print Publication ‘The Metrograph’

The Metrograph empire is expanding from screen to page.

Metrograph announced a new biannual print publication, titled “The Metrograph,” which will cater to cinephiles and cultural connoisseurs alike. Since its founding in 2016, Metrograph has opened beloved theater Metrograph NYC, which also houses a bookstore and The Commissary restaurant, as well as launched distribution company Metrograph Pictures. Metrograph Pictures is led by former Oscilloscope executive David Laub, who previously announced that Metrograph should target 10 film releases per year with features like “Good One,” “Santosh,” “The Kingdom,” “Gazer,” “April,” and “Miroirs No. 3” among the upcoming slate. Metrograph additionally has an At Home streaming platform and online Journal.

Now, Metrograph is expanding into print with a star-studded creative team launching “The Metrograph.”

“The Sweet East” screenwriter and former Village Voice writer Nick Pinkerton is the Editor-At-Large, whose interview with “Juror #2” director Clint Eastwood will be the tentpole of the first issue. The rare, career-spanning conversation is deemed “The Metrograph Interview #1.” The editorial team also includes Senior Editor Annabel Brady-Brown (co-founder Fireflies Press), Editors Gabriel Jandali Appel (writer, founding business manager of The Drift), and Kelli Weston (critic).

“The Metrograph” features exclusive cover artwork by renowned cinematographer Ed Lachman for Issue 1. Contributors include Ari Aster, Amalia Ulman, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Steve Martin, Simon Rex, and more.

Novelist Yiyun Li, cartoonist Daniel Clowes, critics Hunter Harris and Thora Siemsen, writer Lucy Sante, anad cult writer/actor Cookie Mueller are also among “The Metrograph” Issue 1 team.

“We are excited to see Metrograph continue to grow and evolve,” Christian Grass, the Metrograph CEO, said. “We are now reaching a national audience with our online streaming platform Metrograph At Home, and our distribution arm, Metrograph Pictures, while maintaining the core values of community and curation that make 7 Ludlow such a beloved institution. This beautiful new print publication is the logical next step in Metrograph’s evolution.”

“The Metrograph” will have eclectic content ranging from long-form interviews to artist portfolios and essays, plus profiles of film technicians at work accompanied by original commissioned photography and illustrations. The publication is designed by Pentagram’s Matt Willey.

“We’re delighted to announce ‘The Metrograph’ and to be bringing a new print film publication into the world,” Senior Editor Brady-Brown said. “Much like the way our Ludlow Street theater debuted at a time when many cinemas were shuttering and quickly reversed the trend, becoming a pioneering force in film culture and an incredibly popular destination, we believe readers are hungry for a publication like The Metrograph that treats film with both intelligence and panache, and that film culture is actually alive and kicking.”

The Metrograph magazine is now available for pre-order here and will be on shelf in bookstores on December 10. The inaugural issue is priced at $25, or $15 for Metrograph Members with free domestic shipping. The issue will also be available to purchase at Metrograph and from bookstores around the world. To become a Metrograph Member, look here.
