MGM Hotels Now Bookable with Marriott Points

The new Marriott-MGM partnership is finally live.

MGM Resorts announced its switch to the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program back in July 2023 after dropping World of Hyatt. Eight months later, MGM properties are now available to book through the Marriott Bonvoy reservations system, meaning members can earn or redeem points for stays.

This is a welcome addition for Marriott Bonvoy members headed to the Las Vegas Strip. Previously, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas was one of the few Marriott options on the Strip; with the addition of the MGM portfolio, there are nearly 10 properties.

Not all is lost for Hyatt members and the once-hefty Las Vegas Hyatt portfolio, though. Hyatt added the Rio Hotel & Casino (with more than 2,500 rooms) to its offerings, and is currently renovating the property into a Destination by Hyatt hotel.

For now, here’s what you need to know about this major loyalty program swap. Plus, learn how you can take advantage of the chance to use Marriott points in Vegas, or enjoy Marriott Bonvoy elite status benefits at an MGM property.

At press time, there are 16 properties where you can earn and redeem Marriott Bonvoy points when staying at an MGM property. All properties are in Las Vegas, Nevada, unless otherwise noted.

If you’re looking for the cheapest redemption among these newest additions, it’s most likely at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino, where you can often find some 5,000-point nights.

The New York-New York Hotel & Casino rates are also low, sometimes beginning at 9,000 points per night.

Marriott Bonvoy operates a dynamic pricing model, which means that the number of points you need for a redemption night can change by day. For instance, a stay at The Bellagio Hotel & Casino, famous for its water fountain show and gardens, will set you back 45,000 points for off-peak nights and as much as 145,000 points on peak nights.

Marriott Bonvoy members with elite status can take advantage of some of their familiar perks at MGM properties.

Members can link MGM Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy accounts to enjoy an elite status match with some reciprocal perks.

Not all benefits apply, but this is what you can expect at MGM properties:

With the Marriott Bonvoy partnership, these resort fees are no longer being waived unless you have Ambassador Elite status.

This means that a redemption night, even at 5,000 points per night, can vary in value depending on your needs. NerdWallet values Marriott points at 0.8 cent each, so a $120 hotel room shouldn’t cost more than 15,000 points. But the $42 or even $50 resort fee each night at some of these MGM hotels might eat into your cent per point value.

It’s not all bad news though since Marriott Bonvoy brings its own beneficial aspects. While it may not waive resort fees, the program offers a fifth night free offer on award stays when you book the first four nights with points. This is also true with MGM redemptions and can lead to savings on points, even if you’re paying the resort fee.

Regardless of trip length, it is wise to compare the cost of redeeming points at an MGM property or another Marriott Bonvoy hotel. When you look at the cost in points versus cost in cash and then resort fees, the comparison may make the redemption easier to understand.

For example, room rates in cash at the Excalibur Hotel & Casino can be as low as $28.

With base rates this low plus the resort fee, it may make more sense to pay in cash. Another upside of paying in cash is that you will earn Elite Night Credits that count towards elite status.

Of course, staying with Marriott throughout the year can help accumulate both points and status levels, but you can also earn points by using a Marriott co-branded credit card.

The new partnership between Marriott Bonvoy and MGM Resorts is now in full swing with members able to earn and redeem points at more than a dozen participating properties. For travelers who collect Marriott points, the addition of MGM properties adds several iconic hotels to the loyalty program’s mix.

If you want to work towards the next level of status or save points for a more thrifty redemption, paying for stays in cash can be the smart money move — despite having to pay resort fees.
