Adapted from the restaurant Helen in Birmingham, Alabama, this red wine-based cocktail is spiked with aged rum and sweetened with maple syrup. A medley of spices like cloves, cardamom, nutmeg, pink peppercorns, and cinnamon infuse the red wine as it gently heats on the stove. Garnish with orange slices or twists, cinnamon sticks, and star anise, which will float beautifully on the surface. Alternatively, shop for dried orange slices.
What Type of Wine Should You Use for Mulled Wine?
For this classic winter warmer, you’ll want to start with a dry (not sweet), medium-bodied red wine. The team at Helen recommends Beaujolais, made from the gamay grape, or Chianti. Other good options include pinot noir, Grenache, or Malbec. Stay away from anything too heavy, like zinfandel or cabernet sauvignon.
