500,000 Electric Stoves Recalled From Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Costco Due to Fire Hazard

A set of 500,000 LG electric stoves, sold over the last 10 years, has been recalled after being involved in more than 28 fires across the country, according to a new notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The LG Slide-In and Freestanding Ranges—which were sold at Best Buy, Costco, Lowe’s, Home Depot, and other appliance stores—have front-mounted knobs that can accidentally be turned on by people or pets. There have been 86 reported incidents of them being turned on accidentally, resulting in at least 28 fires, eight injuries, three fires that caused pet deaths, and $340,000 in property damage.

As part of the recall, LG will provide a warning label with instructions on how to use the stove’s Lock Out/Control Lock function (on the control panel) to disable the knobs when you’re not using the stove. (If you have an affected stove, you can also watch a video on how to use the Control Lock feature.)

The affected stoves had the following model numbers, which you’ll find posted inside the oven door or the storage drawer:

As part of the recall, the Consumer Product Safety Commission also reminds you to keep kids and pets away from the stove, make sure your stove is off before you go to bed or leave the house, and keep items off of the stove to reduce the risk of fires. (Good advice for everyone!)
