Remember the iconic “bumped ponytail” from the ‘90s? Well, the bump is officially back—according to the Golden Globes, anyway. Volumized updos were everywhere at the 2025 Golden Globes last night, but they were made a touch more modern than the old-school bouffants you may remember.
“For Nicole’s hair, we drew inspiration from the iconic styles of the 1960s and 1970s, with a nod to the Studio 54 era,” says celebrity stylist Adir Abergel, referencing Nicole Kidman’s Babygirl bouffant look. “Nicole’s dress features a stunning open back, so we wanted to create a style that would not only highlight that detail but also accentuate Nicole’s amazing hair.”
Kidman wasn’t the only actress sporting an architectural updo last night. “Matlock” star Kathy Bates sported an ultra-puffed waved pony, and Golden Globes nominees Angelina Jolie and Margaret Qualley also sported flowing manes with pushed-up poufs.
If you don’t think you have enough hair to rock a big hairdo, don’t worry. Abergel created this bombshell style using hair extensions, specifically BELLAMI’s Silk Seam clip-ins. “Obviously, using the right products that will maintain the look for a long period of time is incredibly important,” Abergel shared on Instagram Stories. “And for me, extensions are a huge part of creating these styles.”
Looks like big hair is here to stay for 2025. Want to make your own hair-raising statement? Here’s exactly how Abergel achieved Kidman’s voluminous bouffant, and how you can recreate the look off the red carpet.
How to Get the “Bumpit” Bouffant
- Begin the styling process by using a blow-dry brush to achieve maximum volume. Abergel used his Denman Brush and Kristin Ess Soft Volume Blow Dry Brush to smooth out Kidman’s natural curls.
- Pull all your hair back into a tight ponytail.
- Incorporate pieces of BELLAMI Hair 18” Silk Seam Clip-In Hair Extensions (Abergel used the shade Golden Hour for Kidman) to the crown and back of your head, adding density and fullness throughout.
- Use a curling iron, like the 2 inch Kristin Ess Titanium Curling Iron, to add movement to the ends of your hair.
- To get the volumized bump, use a brush and hairspray to backcomb just the crown of the ponytail. Alternatively, you can use an actual hair bump to achieve the volume, although this isn’t necessary.
- For the high-shine look, apply some hair oil throughout (Abergel used Virtue’s Healing Oil).
