Last month, Helen Mirren revealed that a scene was cut from “Barbie,” where Olivia Colman “comes in and tries to take over the role of the Narrator and I had to fight her off.”
“I never saw it,” Olivia Colman told IndieWire at the New York City premiere of Sony Pictures Classics’ satirical whodunnit “Wicked Little Letters” at the Crosby Street Hotel on March 20.
“They had arranged a call between me, David Heyman, the producer, and Greta Gerwig. I thought, ‘Oh, I know what this must be [for],’” Colman continued. “It made perfect sense, because it didn’t add to the story, it was just fun. Maybe they were running over, I don’t know. But it was kind of perfect for me, because I got paid for the job, and then no one could say I was shit in it.”
Not only does Colman lead Thea Sharrock’s dark comedy, she produces it as well. “I’m the worst person. I have no idea what producers do,” the Oscar winner humorously reflected. “I see them working really hard and I didn’t do any of that. What I did was call Jessie [Buckley] and say, ‘Will you come and play with me?’”
Though both Colman and Buckley starred in Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s “The Lost Daughter” in 2021, they never shared any scenes together as Buckley’s character was the younger version of Colman’s. But now, the good friends and co-stars finally get to share the screen together. “She’s one of my best friends and I love her so much,” Buckley said of working alongside Colman. “I love her so much as a woman and have always admired everything she does. I remember seeing ‘Tyrannosaur’ and having no idea how she even did that. You know, she’s just this kind of superhuman. Getting to go to work with her every day and have fun and be really naughty together was just incredible. If I could work with her on every job, I would be.”
Jessie Buckley will be reuniting with director Gyllenhaal for her upcoming Frankenstein lore feature at Warner Bros. “We are just about to start [filming],” Buckley told IndieWire, while sporting a bleach blonde bob cut, as perhaps a potential tease of her upcoming character. “I feel so grateful that I get to be part of a coin of extraordinary women who have so much to say, such brilliant minds, and such imagination. It is beyond my wildest dreams getting to go back and work with [Gyllenhaal] again. We really fell in love working on ‘The Lost Daughter.’”
Celebrating her Irish Academy Award Best Actress nomination for her performance in “Fingernails,” Buckley also reflected on the hot moment that Irish actors are having right now, especially with fellow IFTA nominees Barry Keoghan and Cillian Murphy. “I always see Barry around,” Buckley said. “With Cillian, similarly, I’m such a fan. He’s been somebody who’s been doing incredible work for such a long time and is always so professional. I admire him so much as an actor and as a human. I just think he’s just one of the most gorgeous human beings in the world. I would love to work with either!”
And before we let Colman go, we had to ask her about the successful year that her “The Favourite” director Yorgos Lanthimos has had with “Poor Things.” “I mean, I would work with him again for free any time, to be honest, and I think he probably knows that,” Colman said. “I know whenever he wins everything, and I text him and go, ‘You’re amazing!’”
