Osgood Perkins Directs Time Traveling Horror

Osgood Perkins is getting into the relationship-horror film subgenre. The auteur, who recently helmed both “Longlegs” and “The Monkey” for NEON, is set to release his third film with the distributor in less than a 16-month span. Perkins also became the first ever filmmaker to land a first-look deal with the acclaimed studio, as announced in May 2025.

For “Keeper,” though, writer/director Perkins is just helming it: Nick Lepard wrote the script, with the one-location horror film shot during the 2023 strikes between the “Longlegs” and “The Monkey” productions. The logline for “Keeper” reads: “During an anniversary getaway at a remote cabin, a wife (Tatiana Maslany) is left alone after her husband (Rossif Sutherland) departs, only to confront a sinister presence that exposes the cabin’s chilling past.”

Maslany also starred in Perkins’ “The Monkey,” which offered a sneak peek at “Keeper” in a post-credits scene. Perkins told IndieWire that “Keeper” is a “beautiful, beautiful movie” that has a “grown-up, kind of relationship horror” aspect. Perkins raved that actress Maslany is “just the greatest. She’s so infinite. I’m so lucky to have her.”

And that wasn’t the only stroke of luck on the project: “Keeper” was shot as an indie during the strikes. “It was made during the [Writers Guild] strike, so I couldn’t write it,” Perkins said. “This lovely Canadian non-union guy [Nick Lepard] wrote this movie and we sort of figured out this thing.”

He continued of his career, “I’ve landed myself in a supremely lucky position where all of my movies get to be one of one, right? I think that’s almost expected now, at least after ‘Longlegs” into ‘The Monkey.’ I think everybody’s getting, ‘Oh right, he’s not going to hit the same beat twice, I don’t know what to expect.’”

Perkins added to IndieWire that ‘Keeper’ will be similar to his “zoomed out” approach to the horror genre. While “Longlegs” was his “pop version” of horror, “The Monkey” was a comedy about death; “Keeper” is a meditation on relationships, much like fellow NEON release “Together.”

NEON will premiere “Keeper” in theaters November 14. Check out the teaser trailer below.
