‘Outer Range’ Canceled at Amazon After 2 Seasons

“Outer Range,” the sci-fi and mystery series led by Josh Brolin, has been canceled by Amazon Studios after two seasons and will not return for a third on Prime Video, an individual with knowledge of the decision told IndieWire.

Brian Watkins created the series that was executive produced by Charles Murray, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Ernest McNealey, Josh Brolin, Tony Krantz, Heather Rae, and Jon Paré. Brolin led the cast that also included Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, Tamara Podemski, Lewis Pullman, Tom Pelphrey, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, Isabel Arraiza, Olive Abercrombie, and Will Patton.

The series blended the paranormal and the rugged, rural Western followed Brolin as Royal Abbott, a rancher fighting for his land and family who discovers an unfathomable phenomenon at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness in the form of a dark void. The second season picked up as the family was now grappling with the sudden disappearance of their granddaughter, deepening the stakes and the mystery of the void surrounding them.

IndieWire upon its debut in April 2022 disparagingly wrote in its review “‘Outer Range’ seemed to be for people who were fans of ‘Yellowstone’ but wished the series was more like ‘Lost.’”

The first season of “Outer Range” spent five weeks on Nielsen’s streaming charts, and the second season has cropped up on the list for the last three weeks since it premiered on May 16. But despite Brolin’s star power, it never reached the level of attention as a series like Amazon’s “Fallout,” which had Prime Video’s second largest debut ever.

In between seasons 1 and 2, “Outer Range” changed showrunners, moving from Zev Borow to Charles Murray. Brolin even got to make his directorial debut on an episode of the series.

Some of the creatives from the series spoke on one of IndieWire’s Consider This panels back in May 2022, explaining how they built the show’s many sets for scratch and managed to turn their shooting location in New Mexico into Wyoming where the series is set.
