Police arrested a 26-year-old man on firearms charges, calling him a “strong” person of interest in last week’s killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Monday.
An employee at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa. called police when a customer came in who resembled images police released of the man who shot the insurance executive, Tisch said.
Local authorities on Monday arrested the man, identified as Luigi Mangione, who allegedly had a gun and suppressor, as well as a fake New Jersey ID matching one the shooter used to check into a hostel, Tisch said.
Mangione hasn’t been charged in Thompson’s death, authorities said Monday afternoon. NYPD officers were traveling to Altoona to interview Mangioni, NYPD leaders said during a press conference Monday afternoon.
They said authorities found a handwritten document that allegedly describes Mangione’s “motivation and mindset.”
“We don’t think that there’s any specific threats to other people mentioned in that document, but it does seem that he has some ill will toward corporate America,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said.
Thompson was shot in the back and leg on Dec. 4 while walking toward a Manhattan hotel where the insurance firm’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group (UNH), was holding an investor conference, the NYPD said. The shooter then ran off, biked into Central Park and left the city, police said, prompting an extensive manhunt.
Thompson, 50, of Minnesota, started at UnitedHealth in 2004 and became CEO of its insurance division in April of 2021, according to the company.
Shares of UnitedHealth Group, a Dow component, are down some 6% since the shooting. They were about 2% higher in Monday afternoon trading.
