Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift Are Bringing Back Jazz Tights

Media darling Sabrina Carpenter is responsible for an ever-rolling cascade of trends. She definitely gets credit for her signature curtain bangs that are everywhere right now, and there’s no doubt teddy lingerie sales have skyrocketed thanks to the singer, too.

The newest Carpenter-inspired craze? Jazz tights. They’re basically a wardrobe staple for her performances at this point, and an increasing number of people are adopting them into their own outfits. (Taylor Swift wears them too!) Here’s how to style jazz tights for everyday wear so you can get in on the trend.

What Are Jazz Tights?

Jazz tights are thick, form-fitting tights typically worn by dancers or performers. These entertainers need a flexible, breathable option that can endure intense movement and showcase their form, explains Corinne Pierre-Louis, a writer, stylist, and fashion editor. They’re typically made from stretchy materials like nylon and spandex, and are designed to move seamlessly with the body.

“One of my favorite film quotes of all time is ‘Do not question my commitment to sparkle motion!’ from the movie Donnie Darko. It sums up the latest iteration of the tights trend: ultra shimmery opaque neutral tone legs,” adds celebrity fashion stylist Jenni Lee.

Long story short, this sparkly garment revolutionized both dance and fashion back in the ‘70s, with Liza Minnelli making them particularly iconic via her Cabaret performances. In the 1980s they were popular again thanks to the aerobics boom, Lee says, noting influences like Jane Fonda and the hit musical Flashdance.

“Now, they’re experiencing another renaissance as part of the ‘dancewear as streetwear’ movement, championed by superstars like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift on their tours,” Lee explains. “Most recently, Sabrina Carpenter has made them a signature part of her stage wardrobe, styling them with a sweet-meets-sultry aesthetic that echoes Ann-Margaret’s iconic looks in Bye Bye Birdie and other 1960s influences.”

How to Style Jazz Tights

Everything that Sabrina Carpenter or Taylor Swift touches basically turns to gold. And in this case, we’re looking at a 24-carat boom of jazz tights. Even if you’re not a performer routinely hitting the stage, you can absolutely incorporate jazz tights into your everyday streetwear.

“It’s clear that jazz tights have transcended the dance studio,” Pierre-Louis says. The key, though, is to make sure you’re erring on sophisticated versus costume-y. Here are a few ideas for styling jazz pants with your everyday fits.

Try Sporty Vibes

The pantless trend is still going strong. Layer your jazz tights under an oversized graphic sweatshirt or hoodie to create a balanced silhouette, Lee suggests. Complete the look with chunky sneakers or thigh-high boots.

Pair Them With a Bodysuit

For another variation on the pantless trend that’s a bit more covered, Pierre-Louis suggests styling jazz tights with a bodysuit and biker shorts, layered under an oversized blazer. “Finish with clean, white sneakers or pumps, depending on your personal style,” she adds.

Go Ultra Feminine

If you want to veer away from a sporty aesthetic, lean into a super feminine look. Style your jazz tights with a babydoll dress or teddy and a pair of cute flats or heels.

Have a Mini Moment

“If you want to channel Sabrina Carpenter vibes, consider wearing jazz tights under a mini skirt or high-waisted shorts, paired with a cropped sweater or fitted turtleneck,” says Pierre-Louis. “Finish your look off with Mary-Jane or mules.”

Make It Monochromatic

When in doubt, embrace a monochromatic color scheme. “Follow the Kardashian approach with a bodycon dress, long sweater coat, and pointy flats for an edgy yet refined look,” Lee says.
