Sarah Michelle Gellar Changes her Mind About ‘Buffy’ Reboot
After previously shutting down the idea, Sarah Michelle Gellar said she is now open to returning to the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” universe.
In an appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Gellar shared that she has been considering reprising her role as Buffy in a potential project.
“I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said on the talk show. “But watching ‘[And Just Like That…]’ and seeing ‘[Dexter: Original Sin],’ and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”
Gellar added that “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” would not necessarily need to be relegated to a prequel either, and that there could be a wealth of different narrative options to pursue.
“It could be anything,” Gellar added. “It’s a universe. It makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”
In 2023, the Golden Globe nominee expressed to SFX Magazine (via IndieWire) that she was not particularly interested in being involved in a “Buffy” revival.
“I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done,” Gellar said about returning as the character. “We wrapped that up.”
Gellar can next be seen in the “Dexter” prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin.” She also starred in “Wolf Pack” in 2023.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” ran from 1997 to 2003 and was adapted from the 1992 film of the same name. It centered around Gellar as Buffy, a teenage girl tasked with fighting off vampires and other evil creatures.
