Why Does Maximus Of The Brotherhood Of Steel Look So Familiar?

Fallout stars some very familiar performers, including the actor who plays the key role of Maximus from the Brotherhood of Steel.

Fallout, of course, is the long-awaited streaming series adaptation of the hugely successful video game series from Todd Howard’s Bethesda Softworks. All eight episodes of Fallout are now streaming on Prime Video.

Among Fallout’s stars is Aaron Moten, whose character Maximus suits up in Power Armor as part of the militaristic group the Brotherhood of Steel. The organization’s goal is to preserve technology in a post-apocalyptic America, which remains a desolate wasteland following a devasting nuclear conflict 219 years earlier known as the Great War.

Maximus is a squire in the Brotherhood of Steel, but his allegiance begins to shift once Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell) frees him from the Power Armor suit he’s trapped in because its fusion core has been removed.

Before scoring the pivotal role of Maximus in Fallout, Moten starred in supporting roles in two films in 2022 — Emancipation and Father Stu.

In Emancipation, Moten plays Knowls, who slave owner Fassel (Ben Foster) uses to help hunt down Peter (Will Smith) after he escapes slavery. In Father Stu, Moten plays Ham, a non-judgmental friend of fellow seminarian and former troublemaker Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg).

Moten’s TV Work Includes ‘Mozart In The Jungle’ And ‘Disjointed’

Born February 28, 1989, in Austin, Texas, Aaron Moten acted in a series of short films and plays from 2006-2013 before he landed his first television role in 2014 with a guest appearance on the CBS series NCIS.

Since that point, Moten has alternated between roles on film and television, with turns in such movies as 2015’s Ricki and the Flash, 2017’s Ironwood— in which he starred in the lead role — and 2019’s Native Son.

On television, Moten was featured in a recurring role from 2015-2016 in Gael Garcia Bernal’s high-profile comedy-drama series Mozart in the Jungle. In addition, Moten appeared in four episodes of the eight-part 2016 miniseries The Night Of opposite Riz Ahmed and John Turturro.

Moten also starred as a series regular in Kathy Bates’ comedy series Disjointed, which ran from 2017-2018, and landed another gig as a series regular in John Slattery’s sci-fi crime drama Next in 2020.

Fallout, of course, presents Moten the unique opportunity of playing a character based on a beloved franchise — sometimes while he’s suited up in the iconic Power Armor based on the game series.

Moten told me in a Zoom interview that it was an amazing experience filming scenes with the practical Power Armor suit produced by Legacy Effects and shooting scenes of Maximus underneath the rig’s helmet.

“It was a fun experience to be jumping all over the place to bring the suit to life,” Moten said.

All eight episodes of Fallout are streaming on Prime Video.
