SNP leader fears ‘prolonged austerity’ under possible Labour government

SNP leader John Swinney says he worries the Labour Party has signed up to “prolonged austerity” in order to boost its financial credibility.

During a speech in Glasgow, the first minister says his ability to enhance Scotland’s health and education services could be “eroded by spending cuts from London”.

Mr Swinney added that there was a broad consensus to “get rid of the Tories”, but said Scottish voters were likely to be “disappointed” in the alternative being offered by the Labour Party.

Labour has said the UK would not return to austerity measures if it wins the general election. It has also pledged not to raise VAT, income tax or National Insurance.
