The new year is prime time to set goals for the future, dive into new adventures, and experiment with new trends. It’s also the perfect time to look back, reflect, and say “see ya” to things that have run their course or no longer work. That’s true no matter what category you’re talking about, but today we’re zeroing in on beauty trends that experts say we’re leaving in the rearview mirror as we head into 2025.
1. Laminated Brows
A sharp examination of brow blindness asked us all to question our eyebrow game, and overly laminated brows really got some heat.
“The trend of superglueing your eyebrows into place, stuck right onto your forehead is on their way out. It’s super unhealthy for your eyebrows, can clog the hair follicles, and cause breakouts,” says Natalie Dresher, a celebrity and influencer makeup artist. She says to swap in fluffy brows that are clean, groomed, and much more natural looking. If you can’t resist a little gloss, she suggests using a light brow gel to hold them in place—emphasis on the light.
2. Coquette Makeup
“The coquette makeup trend of pink cheeks, lips, and eyes paired with wispy lashes was a blast from the past when it arrived early last year,” says celebrity makeup artist Bryan Cantor. In its place, he says it’s all about the “blonzer” trend. “This sun-kissed look is created by substituting bronzer or bronze-toned blushes for the pink hues we were seeing in 2024.”
3. Chiseled Contour
Contour has been on the outs since its raucous heyday in the 2010s, but the deadline has officially hit to quit it with the overly chiseled look, and it’s December 31, 2024.
“For 2025, overly sculpted cheeks and harsh lines are on their way out. This looks too overdone as we head into 2025 where soft, naturally radiant skin is in,” notes Angie Warren, a Columbus-based makeup artist and esthetician. “Think radiant skin with lots of blush and subtle additions of creamy highlight on the high points of the face to give structure without hollowing out the cheeks.”
4. Brat Green
Brat green was a literal movement and we’ll remember the era fondly, but it’s time to put the verdant hue on the backburner (at least for now). “As much as we still love Charli xcx and her music, the time for Brat Green has passed,” Cantor says. “Replace your vivid green eyeshadow with metallic eyeshadows. Whether you apply a soft wash from lash to brow sans liner, or create a bold look with an ultra-pigmented application and lots of smudged black liner, the time for gold, bronze, copper, and chrome is now.”
5. Clumpy Spider Lashes
It’s hard to believe that clumpy spider lashes were even a thing to covet in 2024, but just as fast as this trend came it’s being replaced by its counterpart.
“Instead of applying layers of heavy, clumpy mascara, just throw away your mascara altogether,” Cantor says, referring to the new ghost lashes trend that’s making waves RN. “We saw models walking the runway with bare lashes in many shows last season, with looks ranging the gamut from natural to bold.”
6. Blush-Infused Undereye Concealer
We love a beauty hack, but the viral TikTok trend of people mixing blush into their concealer went a little off the rails and it’s time to reassess. Dresher says it’s way too easy to look sunburnt or sick with this trend.
“A peachy pink color corrector under the correct shade of concealer to correct and highlight the eye will always be timeless, classic, and beautiful,” she says. “I love a brighter undereye so I would go a shade or two lighter with your concealer.”
7. Neutral Pink/Nude Lips
You might have been wondering where all the lip color has gone in recent years. It went on a little vacay, but now it’s time for neutral lip hues to pack their bags for a return of saturated hues.
“Neutral lip colors had a big moment but deep, bold lip colors are coming back to take the spotlight,” Warren says. “We’re shifting to more natural, radiant skin with a pop of color on the lips. We saw this on the runway for spring so we know the trend is sticking around beyond the colder months when we typically see deeper lip colors.”
The new year is the perfect time to experiment with unexpected, perhaps even daring, shades.
8. Overly Glittered Décolleté
Glittery necks, arms, and cleavage were a fun nod to the ‘90s—arguably the wild west of body glitter—but 2025 is a change to go, well, more subtle.
“Glitter sprays and glitter lotions have come back for a bit and remind me of my dance recital days,” says Dresher. You don’t have to completely discard the shimmery stuff; just keep things more low-key. “Use a lotion with a more subtle shimmer to it, and only highlight the collarbone or shoulders for a more subtle, sexy, and hydrated finish.
