The latest trailer for 28 Years Later has fans clamoring to rewatch 28 Days Later, but much like the film’s characters who wake up to find the world they once knew gone, film buffs are realizing that 28 Days Later is no longer available to stream. The fillm is acclaimed as one of the best horror movies of all time, but it can’t be rented, it’s not available on streaming, and the DVD and Blu-Ray versions are out of print.
Why Is 28 Days Later Not Streaming?
The film was independently produced and distributed by Fox Searchlight Pictures, now owned by Disney. While the sequel, 28 Weeks Later, is available to stream on Disney-owned Hulu, 28 Days Later has been unavailable for years due to rights issues. The rights to 28 Days Later are now owned by Sony, who won a bidding war for 28 Years Later in February of this year.
While fans have been waiting for years for 28 Days Later to return to online platforms, the end is nigh, as Sony launched a sign-up page for fans to be notified of the film’s digital release. The page reads, “Sign up and get notified when 28 Days Later will be available to preorder on Digital,” implying that the film will be able to buy, but it remains unclear if it will be streaming anytime soon.
How To Watch 28 Days Later
While Blu-Ray and DVD sales continue to dwindle and Netflix shuttered the DVD service that made it famous, films and TV shows disappearing from streaming services is all too common, which is why there’s still a robust (if niche) appetite for physical film releases.
Currently, the only (legal) way to watch 28 Days Later is by buying a secondhand DVD or Blu-Ray, and some merchants have put an absurdly high markup on the film given its scarcity — you can find copies for upwards of $200.
If you’re looking to stream 28 Weeks Later, the best option is Hulu, which is available as a bundle with Disney+ and ESPN+ or Disney+ and Max. It’s also available to rent or buy from Amazon Prime.
28 Days Later is directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, who are both returning for 28 Years Later. The new film, releasing June 20, 2025, stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, with Cillian Murphy set to reprise his role. The latest sequel will arrive 18 years after the second installment, 28 Weeks Later, which starred Robert Carlyle, Jeremy Renner, and Rose Byrne.
