The Best Whitening Strips, According to Our Editors

Whether I’m watching a movie or marathoning Sex and the City (again), I’ve noticed that every actor seems to have dazzling white teeth—like, so bright that they’re almost blinding. But let’s be real: Getting a whiter, brighter smile is definitely easier said than done. Professional whitening treatments can be seriously expensive, and I can’t stand the slimy feeling of those whitening trays—especially when they don’t even work. And giving up my morning coffee? Not happening.

That’s why I love whitening strips—they’re low commitment, easy to apply, and let me carry on with my normal get-ready routine while they’re on. To find the best ones, we tested some of the most popular adhesive and dissolvable options over two weeks. While some tasted bad, caused irritation, or simply felt icky in our mouths, the Crest 3D White Luxe Whitestrip Teeth Whitening Kit was a hands-down favorite.

Read on for why we’re obsessed, and why you need them in your medicine cabinet ASAP.

After finally trying the Crest 3D Whitestrips Glamorous White Strips for ourselves, we can vouch that they’re worth the hype. Here’s a quick breakdown.

Comfort

Whitening strips are often harsh on sensitive teeth, so we were blown away by how comfortable these felt. To be honest, they don’t have that “barely there” feel (we’ve come to accept that no whitening strips really do). That said, they didn’t bother us at all, and we weren’t in a rush to take them off.

Even after the full 30-minute wear time, we felt like we could have kept them on longer. The only time we noticed any discomfort was right after our dentist appointment when our gums were already feeling a little tender.

Ease of Application

These strips are super easy to apply—just peel each one off the plastic liner and stick it onto your teeth. The longer strip goes on your top teeth, and the shorter one on the bottom.

Some of the other whitening strips we tested didn’t fit our teeth well, causing us to have a sort of tug-of-war getting them to cover every spot. That’s why these strips stand out—they’re long and wide enough to cover all of our visible teeth easily. Our only complaint is the creasing. They’re prone to folding, so you’ll want to apply them slowly and steadily.

Effectiveness

While the kit promises “eight levels whiter,” we found the results much more subtle. After two weeks of daily use, our smile definitely looked more white than stained, but the results were more noticeable up close.

Ultimately, these strips aren’t going to help you achieve dramatic yellow-to-white results overnight. However, for those who regularly drink red wine, coffee, tea, or other staining beverages, they’re a great way to maintain or boost your current smile.

Associate editorial director Taylor Rock swears by these teeth whitening strips that show results after one application. Seriously. They come in so many different flavors, too—grape, strawberry, peach, blue raspberry, wintergreen, peppermint—and cost just $20.

Comfort

If you’re used to ultra-thin, pliable whitening strips, these might take some getting used to. They’re thick but still malleable and fit perfectly around the top and bottom teeth. Yes, you can feel them, but you forget they’re even there once you move on to something else: a shower, your makeup, or a YouTube video.

They don’t foam like crazy like some other formulas do. All ingredients stay snug to your teeth while they work, and there’s just a small amount of what feels like gel on your teeth when you remove them. To get it off, just swish and spit. The best part, however, is that these do not affect sensitive teeth—they’re gentle. Rock (who has sensitive teeth) formerly used the Crest 3D Whitestrips 1-Hour Express, and wow, those hurt. Never again.

Ease of Application

These are super easy to apply. Like most strips, they peel right off the foil they come in and are ready to apply to your teeth. Once on, they stay perfectly in place—you might even have to pull on them a bit to take them off after 30 minutes (though you can leave them on for up to an hour). It’s different, but it’s not uncomfortable. It’s all for the greater good of keeping them in place for optimal results.

Effectiveness

OK, now we’re at the exciting part: These whitening strips give you a significantly whiter smile after the first application. This is awesome for anyone looking for immediate results ahead of an event, or just because. Oftentimes, Rock doesn’t even use the entire 14-day supply. She goes two or three days in a row to achieve the brightness she’s looking for, and whenever she needs a touch-up (usually months later), she breaks back into the box. A noticeably whiter smile in just 30 minutes feels like magic (especially when paired with a really good self-tanner).

More Teeth Whitening Strips We Tested and Liked

Along with our two winners, we tested (and loved) several other whitening kits, including classic strips and ones with LED lights. These four stood out for being fast, effective, and easy to use—all without causing any irritation to our teeth or gums. My personal favorite is the Crest 3D Whitestrips, Professional Effects; while I only use the kit every now and then, I notice results immediately after use.

Our Testing Process

To find the best teeth whitening strips, we tested some of the most popular kits, including both adhesive and dissolvable options. First, we compared the shade of our teeth to the Dental Shade Guide.

We applied the strips according to each brand’s instructions, noting how easy the process was. While wearing the strips, we paid attention to how they felt on our teeth—whether they were discreet, obtrusive, slimy, sticky, etc.—and whether we experienced any discomfort.

After the recommended wear time, we rinsed our mouths as instructed. Since teeth become more porous after whitening, we avoided dark foods and beverages for at least 24 hours.

We used each box of strips for two weeks, tracking how long it took to notice a change in color and how noticeable it was.

How to Shop for Teeth Whitening Strips Like a Pro

Type

There are two main types of whitening strips: adhesive and dissolvable. Adhesive strips are the most popular—they’re easy to apply and tend to have stronger, more targeted results. The downside? You’ll need to rinse the film off afterward, and there’s a risk of uneven whitening depending on how well you apply them. We found the Crest 3D White Luxe Whitestrip Teeth Whitening Kit super easy to use, and the strips were wide enough to cover all of our visible teeth.

Next: dissolvable strips. The benefit is that there’s no removal process—rather than rinsing and brushing, they just dissolve on their own, making them ideal for on-the-go use. They’re also usually gentler on sensitive teeth because you don’t apply them directly to the enamel. However, the formula is usually weaker than adhesive options.

During testing, we much preferred adhesive strips, as the dissolvable ones were uncomfortable while dissolving and left a slimy, sticky residue on our teeth.

Ingredients

When shopping for teeth whitening strips, ingredients are probably the most important thing to consider. After all, anything going in your mouth needs a real stamp of approval—ideally from the American Dental Association (ADA).

Most teeth whitening strips—including the ones used at dental offices—have hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Both whiten your teeth through a process called oxidation. They penetrate the enamel and break down the chemical build of stains, making them less visible. Hydrogen peroxide is one of the key ingredients in both of our picks—and it’s ADA-approved.

Just keep in mind that, while effective, these ingredients can be harsh on sensitive teeth. If you fall in that category, consider a natural formula or one with lower levels of hydrogen peroxide. We also recommend looking for options with potassium nitrate, a desensitizing ingredient found in many toothpastes.

Application Time

If you’re anything like me, you love instant gratification—the second I decide I want my teeth to be whiter, I expect them to immediately follow suit. Unfortunately, that’s not how most whitening strips work. To get the results you want, you’ll need to be willing to do the time.

Most strips are supposed to stay on your teeth for 15 minutes to an hour. If you hate the feeling of something on your teeth (I know I do), look for an option on the shorter end. The tradeoff is that products with a shorter wear time usually have higher levels of hydrogen peroxide, which could irritate those with sensitivities. Either way, make sure to only use the strips for the intended amount of time. Leaving them on for too long could cause irritation or inflammation.

For the best results, you’ll also want to stick with the treatment schedule—if you only follow the regimen for a day or two, the effects might not be as noticeable as you’d hoped. The Crest 3D White Luxe Whitestrip Teeth Whitening Kit stays on for 30-minute intervals and should be used consistently for two weeks. We didn’t notice much change until the latter part of the testing period. The Zimba Teeth Whitening Strips, however, significantly whitened our editor’s teeth after a single use—it’s kind of the unicorn of teeth whitening strips.
