September 5, Seed of the Sacred Fig Lead German Film Award Nominations

Oscar contenders September 5 and The Seed of the Sacred Fig, and Andreas Dresen’s historic drama From Hilde, With Love are the frontrunners for this year’s German Film Awards, also called the Lolas, Germany’s equivalent of the Oscars.
September 5, Tim Fehlbaum’s real-life thriller based on the terrorist attacks on the 1972 Munich Olympics, picked up 10 nominations, including for best film and best director, as well as supporting actress nom for Leonie Benesch, who plays a translator for the U.S. television network broadcasting the attacks live to the world.
Second and third in the running are Andreas Dresen’s From Hilde, With Love which picked up 7 Lola nominations, including for best film and best director, with Mohammad Rasoulof’s Iranian drama The Seed of the Sacred Fig right behind with 6.
Rasoulof’s depiction of an Iranian family torn apart by conflicting loyalties to an increasingly oppressive Tehran regime, was set up as a German-French co-production and shot in secret in Iran. It was Germany’s entry for this year’s best international feature at the Oscars. Dresden’s period drama From Hilde, With Love focuses on the Hilde Coppi, a left-wing member of resistance group the Red Orchestra, who was arrested and executed by the Nazis.
Also up for best film are Jan-Ole Gerster’s sun-soaked neo-noir Islands, Ido Fluk’s Köln 75, which chronicles the events that led to Keith Jarrett’s celebrated piano recording, ‘The Köln Concert,’ and Chiara Fleischhacker’s Vena, a drama about a drug-addicted young mother.
Best actress nominees include Hilde star Liv Lisa Fries, Köln 75 lead Mala Emde, and Emma Drogunova of Vena. British actor Sam Riley took two of the three best actor noms, for his lead performances in Islands and as the late dance choreographer John Cranko in Joachim Lang’s biopic Cranko. He goes up against The Seed of the Sacred Fig lead Missagh Zareh.
The German Film Academy announced the German Film Prize nominees live on Monday morning. Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Corsage) and Christian Friedel, star of Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, and part of the ensemble cast of the new season of The White Lotus, announced the bulk of the nominees in a live webstream followed by the best film nominees, announced live on German TV by Friedel and outgoing German culture minister Claudia Roth.
Friedel will host this year’s awards, which will be held in Berlin on May 9.
