What Are Licorice French Nails?

Licorice French nails are essentially a black French tip manicure, often done with a glossy, deep black shade resembling licorice candy, says Erica De Los Santos, nail artist and founder of Nail’d It Beauty Lounge. The name obvi comes from the dark and shiny appearance of black licorice candy—a sweet, but not too sweet treat. For a more unique take, some opt for a sheer black jelly base paired with a darker black French tip, creating a subtle yet striking contrast. 

“For me, it’s that ‘I’m keeping it classy, but don’t mess with me’ feel that’s sophisticated and bold all in one,” De Los Santos says. “Keeping it glossy just adds to the effect, mimicking the sleek shine of licorice candy.” 

She says it’s a fresh take on a Y2K fave and that it’s also a slight deviation from the “clean girl” look—but with a modern, edgy twist. From runways to big-name influencers to celebs like Hailey Bieber and Kylie Jenner, tons of people are sporting this sleek and wearable mani.

Step 1: Prep Your Nails 

Trim, shape, file, and buff your nails. Tend to any stray cuticles or hangnails to ensure you’ve got a great canvas to work with. French manicures truly rely on a perfect canvas to pull off the ultra-polished effect. 

Step 2: Apply a Nude Base Coat 

When it comes to manicures, it truly is all about that base. “Whether you’re doing these on yourself or at the salon you should get a sheer nude base that compliments your skin tone, nothing too opaque,” advises professional manicurist Lauren Ortega. “A little pro tip: Once you find your favorite nude, buy a bottle or two to bring with you to the salon. There’s nothing worse than getting there and not finding your favorite neutral.” 

Step 3: Create the French Tip

Once the base is dry, “take a liner brush and carefully paint a thin black French tip on each nail,” says De Los Santos. “You can keep it classic or slightly curved for a modern touch.” You can also use a French manicure stamping tool or stickers to create a clean line. 

Want an even edgier look? Apply a matte black base instead of nude. You can also add embellishments, like stars, bows, gemstones, or a hint of silver glitter.

Step 4: Seal with a Top Coat 

Once you’re happy with your French tip line, Ortega says to cure and finish with a top coat. Using gel polish will prolong your look for longer than traditional polish. Clean up any rough edges around your nails and finish with some cuticle oil and lotion.
