5 Ways to Organize Your Home With This $30 Rolling Cart

I’ve interviewed a lot of professional organizers, and one thing is clear: Three-tier rolling carts are beloved. These carts hold much more than you’d expect, and they create instant shelving in rooms that are short on space or storage. Plus, you can roll them around to where they’re needed most, making them super versatile. As Amélie Saint-Jacques of Amelie Organizes puts it, “Where don’t I use these?”

I own a three-tier cart and I use it to store arts and crafts, but I’ve been thinking of buying another cart because I can’t resist a useful or pretty storage solution even if I’m not yet sure what to store in it. To get some ideas, I asked pro organizers how they like to use these carts. They had lots of creative suggestions, but below are five of my favorites.

Hair and Beauty Station

If your bathroom counters and drawers are a jumble of hair and beauty products, a three-tier rolling cart can help organize the overflow while keeping it all accessible. “We recently used this cart as a mobile hair station—stocked with products, styling tools, brushes, and accessories,” says Shannon Krause of Tidy Nest. “It’s ready to roll out when in use and tuck away when done.” The cart is also a great place to store hair and beauty products in a teen’s bedroom. They can just roll it to the bathroom when needed then roll it right back when finished.

Mobile Office

Office desks have a tendency to fill up with supplies and knick-knacks. Rather than stuff everything into a cluttered drawer, try stowing items in a three-tier cart. “You can use the cart in an office for a mobile work station, which is how I use mine at home, holding notebooks, chargers, stationery, sticky notes, and all the things that would otherwise end up in a pile,” says professional organizer Shaniece Jones.

Saint-Jacques recommends rolling carts for spaces that serve double-duty as an office. “They are nice if you have a home office in a space that is also used for something else,” she says. “That way you can store office supplies and sometimes even a printer and laptop in the cart to clear the space.”

Art Caddy

Lots of pro organizers use three-tier carts for sewing and art supplies such as markers, paints, paintbrushes, paper, thread, and fabrics. You can categorize items in bins to minimize clutter on each tier. “The key to making the cart work best is getting smaller containers to divide up the space, allowing you to maximize every inch,” says Michele Vig, founder of Neat Little Nest. Tina O’Keeffe of Stow and Behold uses carts specifically for kids’ arts and crafts, “especially when kids are doing art in one room but parents want to be able to roll it away for ‘adult time,’ like in a dining room.”

An Extra Pantry

I enjoy baking but I don’t do it every week, so a lot of my baking equipment gets shoved into hard-to-reach spots like high shelves or the back of cabinets. That’s why I love Saint-Jacques’ idea of keeping all baking supplies in a cart that you can just wheel out when it’s time to bake. “For clients who bake a lot, I like organizing their cookie cutters, food coloring, piping bags, and assortments of sprinkles in a three-tier cart that is then very easy to wheel out of the pantry and to the counter,” she says. The same concept applies to other types of kitchen storage, whether it’s using the cart as a mini bar for liquor or a mini pantry stocked with commonly used items.

Baby Supply Station

Any parent knows how essential it is to keep diapers, wipes, rash cream, and other baby supplies in one place, so that you don’t have to hunt for them when you really need them—especially in the middle of the night. “I’ve used these for clients who are new moms, and the feedback is always the same: It saves them that late-night stroll to the nursery,” says Jones. “I usually place one of these in the bedroom and a duplicate in the nursery stocked with the same essentials.”
