Khloé Kardashian Launches Khloud Protein Popcorn

If you’re one of the naysayers who claims the Kardashian-Jenner clan is famous for no clear reason, it’s likely you’re neglecting to consider that their primary talents don’t lie in the creative arts — rather, this is a family full of business and marketing geniuses, and they’ve spawned plenty of entrepreneurial ventures to prove it.

From Kylie Jenner’s lip kits that practically defined the makeup industry in 2015 to Kim Kardashian’s shapewear and clothing brand Skims, each sister has worked to define her own business portfolio and public personality. This also includes ventures into the beverage world, such as Kendall Jenner’s 818 tequila and Kylie’s canned cocktail line, Sprinter.

And now one member of the family is entering the food business.

Today Khloé Kardashian announced the launch of Khloud Protein Popcorn, a snack that delivers exactly what its name promises. Made with whole-grain corn kernels grown in Nebraska, Khloud is non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher, crafted without seed oils, and a single serving contains seven grams of protein.

“To me, snacks should be easy and delicious and you should feel good about sharing them with family and friends. That’s what inspired Khloud,” Kardashian told Food & Wine. “I didn’t want it to feel like your typical ‘protein snack,’ I wanted something that tasted amazing, was easy and convenient, and was made with real, non-GMO ingredients.”

The popcorn itself isn’t what gives the snack its high protein content. After the corn kernels are air-popped and lightly coated with olive oil, they’re tossed in what the brand calls “Khloud dust.” This proprietary dust is a mixture of seasoning and protein powder made from milk protein isolate.

In simple terms, milk protein isolate is a concentrated form of the protein found in milk. It’s usually obtained from skim milk and involves removing all the non-protein components of the milk through processes such as ultrafiltration.

Protein powder made from milk sounds like it would lend itself to a cheese-flavored snack, so it’s no surprise that one of the first three flavors Khloud Protein Popcorn is launching with will be White Cheddar. This is complemented by two other options: a simple Olive Oil & Sea Salt and Sweet & Salty Kettle Corn.

For anyone less-versed in the Kardashian universe, the decision to release a protein popcorn might seem unexpected. But luckily I do keep up on all things Kardashian, and Khloé’s food brand aligns with her identity as a mom and someone who loves to exercise.

Parents concerned about their children’s protein intake may find this snack a helpful way to sneak in more of the macronutrient. Additionally, those focused on building muscle can add popcorn to their repertoire of protein-rich snacks that go beyond the usual shakes and bars.

As Khloé tells Food & Wine, “When we were dreaming up the vision for Khloud we thought why not make the perfect snack work a bit harder?”

Khloé hopes the popcorn will be helpful for moms on the go.

Seven grams of protein may not sound like a ton, but this isn’t meant to replace a meal — it’s a snack. It’s simply a way to supplement your diet with some extra protein. If you’re a popcorn lover in particular, it has a notably higher protein content than many other ready-to-eat popcorns available. Fan-favorite popcorn brand SkinnyPop, for example, has only two grams of protein in each of its single-serving, 100-calorie bags.

Khloud will be available nationwide and can be purchased at Target locations throughout the United States, on target.com, and khloudfoods.com starting April 29.

It’s likely that popcorn won’t be the only exciting thing we see from Khloud. Khloé says she anticipates more delicious projects from the brand, noting that “We have big plans ahead. We’re staying in snacks but expanding into new categories. I think there’s so much space to reimagine everyday snacking, and I’m so excited.”

But for now, mark your calendar to stock up and the next time you settle in for a movie night, you’ll have a tasty option to help meet your protein goals while enjoying the show.
